HEAT AWARENESS DAY
May 24, 2013
Greetings!
Today's the day to join us in protecting life and health this summer.
BEAT THE HEAT

The Day Resource Center for the Homeless has been warming up for today, National Heat Awareness Day, with good reason: heat is a killer.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), heat claims more lives in an average year than other weather events combined.

That means day shelters are lifesavers in hot, humid climates like Dallas/Fort Worth.

"Shelters safeguard life and health day in and day out, but Texas heat makes access to day shelter essential in summer," Day Resource Center Executive Director Bruce Frankel said.

Because the homeless may be exposed to the elements more often, they're at risk for heat-related illness. Luckily, you can help.

Your gift of $100, $250, or $500 to the Day Resource Center helps homeless men and women follow tips like these to keep their cool:

  • Air conditioning is the single best defense against heat-related illness and death. Seek an air-conditioned environment like the Day Resource Center.
  • Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages. Bottled water and cool fountain water quench thirsts here.
  • Rest: we've got plenty of seats.
  • Take a cool shower, bath, or sponge bath. Day Resource Center guests take more than 1,000 showers here a month.

Donate now and help us beat the heat this summer. Give online or mail your gift to Day Resource Center for the Homeless, P.O. Box 0871, Fort Worth, TX 76101.

You just might be a lifesaver.
