Report Card Special Edition
Hi everyone, We wanted to share some important information as we send out report cards with students this week. As you view your student's report card, please remember that this is an important opportunity to communicate with you regarding your student's progress, and should there be concerns, this is a critical time to work together as a team to intervene and keep students' academic progress moving forward.
Homework
One important piece to keep in mind is the role of homework. Homework provides students the opportunity to practice skills at home that transfer over to school assessments. While homework may not weigh as heavily on the report card, we see a direct link to those students that regularly do homework in that they perform much better on assessment and retain that information much longer. Please help us with this by providing your students structured time to complete their homework and communicate concerns with the teacher if you see them struggling.
End of Year Expectations
As you view this first semester report, keep in mind that this is a mid-year checkpoint. See the attached K-5 end of year expectations for a guide on where students should be by the end of the year. Also please remember that students may receive a "P" on this first semester report card, however on the end-of-year report card, they can only be "meeting" or "exceeding", and anything less would be a "does not meet". If your student receives a P on this report card, it would be a good idea to spend some extra practice on that area.
The Return of Kelso Coffee Hour

Teacher Feature
Hello from Mrs. Hazelton's class!
For the past couple of weeks the kids have been working on opinion writing pieces. They have been learning how to write an opinion letter describing their favorite book to kids in Ms. Travis's class. Their goal was to convince the other 3rd and 4th graders to read the books they suggested. The kids have learned that they have to clearly state their Opinion, provide Reasons and Examples for their opinion, then restate their Opinion. We call this OREO! The kids celebrated their work by eating some OREO cookies of course! They have written some convincing letters and later this month we will pick our favorites to read to Ms. Travis's class and we will display the book reviews in the hall outside our classroom.
We have also been really working hard on behavior, coming up with a new class behavior plan and creating bucket filling posters and sharing those posters with Mrs. Mitchell's 1st and 2nd graders.

News from the KCC
Hello Kelso families! The KCC has some exciting events coming up that we need your help with. Unfortunately, we will not be doing these events if we don't have volunteers to step up and organize and run the event. We are looking for volunteers that will take ownership of the event and follow through. As of right now, these events cannot and will not happen if no one steps up. These events raise money for our school. Please contact Alicia Davis for more information at 503-539-5795 or preskcc@gmail.com.
Movie Night - This is a fun event where Kelso families come enjoy a movie on a friday night. We serve some food and snacks for families to enjoy.
