News from Principal Schweitzer
Hi everyone and happy New Year! Our theme for this month is self-control, as we talk about the different aspects of our lives where that is important (academics, recess, with friends, etc.). Also, please remember
there is no school January 20 and 31st.
As we near the end of the semester we will continue our student recognition program for homework completion, good attendance and math rockstars. Names of those students meeting the criteria will go up on our bulletin boards and they will be recognized in our February assembly.
We are gearing up to start our state testing in February, students in 3rd-5th grade are assessed. This will alter schedules and access to the computer lab slightly until we complete testing.
*** Volunteers wanted for an organizational job- are you into organization? We have a job for you! It is probably a couple hours to help us reorganize a space in our workroom. Any help is appreciated!

Teacher Feature Hello from Mrs. Stratton's class!During January our class is learning the 50 states and capitols along with talking about the northwest region in which we live. We are working on building comprehension and writing skills through our reading response journals. This month in math we are covering a unit on using tables and graphs to represent and compare different situations as well as daily practice of multiplication and division facts. In addition, the kids are learning a bit of German each day such as numbers, colors, days of the week, and some basic conversational phrases. We look forward to our Fit Kids, Strong Body, Strong Mind breaks during the day. It's a wonderful outlet for the class to blow off some steam, learn some healthy life lessons, and feel rejuvenated so we can get back to work. After our successful flash mob at Fred Meyers during the Christmas break to "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," we have decided to try out our country western line dancing skills next. We are having lots of fun!

2014-15 Variance Requests
The Oregon Trail School District considers requests for students to transfer to other schools within our district. Although most of these requests are granted, some are not, due to inadequate space, resources, and other circumstances.
It is important to remember that:
- The district will try to honor your request if possible.
- Variances are granted for one year only. All parents must reapply for variances each year.
- Parents provide home-to-school and school-to-home transportation.
- Each school has unique educational features.
We ask that parents requesting a variance from their neighborhood school attendance area for any reason submit a variance form to their neighborhood/sending school by March 1st. The variance requests will be reviewed and decisions communicated to parents by the first week in May.
Copies of the variance form can be found on our district web page are available at school offices or on our district web page (www.oregontrailschools.com).
