October 2013

 Kelso Kaleidoscope

News from Principal Schweitzer

Hi everyone and happy October! Our theme for this month is healthy lifestyle, as we look for ways to help our students become healthy for life, as well as academically sound.  We are using this month to look at safety, when we think about events like Halloween, and physical health, when we think about classroom celebrations and our snacks.

There is no school October 11th.  Early Release begins October 16th and is every Wednesday until March 19th.  Grades 1-5 will release at 2:30.  AM Kindergarten will have the regular start time but release at 11 AM.  PM Kindergarten will start at 12:15 PM and release at 2:30.

We are also partnering with Kaiser on an October "Fire Up Your Feet" challenge, please go to fireupyourfeet.org and register today.  Students, families and staff can all log their physical activity daily (at school and away) and help us earn cash awards for our school.  You DO need to log activity, not just register.

Our Artist in Residence is starting this month as she works with our students to support literacy through art.  We are looking for some volunteers to help on the following dates in the afternoon (roughly 11:30 on, we could do shifts as well):

October 16- Rutherford
October 21- Hazelton
October 23-Johnson
November 4-Travis
November 8- Stratton
November 18- Meyers and Burt

Thank you! Contact the school if you can help, it should be great!

Teacher Feature
Hello from Ms. Rutherford's class! Caitlin is a veteran teacher in the school district who we are thrilled to have as our first grade teacher.  During October, her class will finish our introductory unit in math and begin a unit on 2D shapes.  After thoroughly going over school rules and discussing how to be bucket fillers, they will now discuss how students can become self-monitors. In addition, for social studies, they will be talking about where they live and learn the names and locations of our city, state, country, continent, and planet. In reading, they are learning comprehension and accuracy strategies and in writing, they are learning how to write a narrative. Thank you Ms. Rutherford!

News from the KCC

The KCC wants to thank everyone that participated in the Jog-a-Thon.  We raised a little over $8,000 for our school this year.  We are now able to help with the cost of field trips, assemblies and other needs here and around the school.  Even though we didn't reach our goal, it was still successful!

We wanted to say a big thank you to Dr. Derek Conklin with Sandy Family Dentistry.  They donated funds to purchase an iPad and extra money to buy educational apps.  They are an amazing and wonderful family and business.  If you get a chance, please thank them!  We also wanted to thank Traci and Doug Jones for donating a banner to help us thank business for donating an iPad!

Are you interested in helping with fundraising???  We need some parents to come together on October 17th at 6pm at the Kelso Library to plan a creative new fundraiser for our school.  We will be providing light snacks and Starbucks coffee!  There will be NO childcare available.  We will be going over options and any new ideas you might have.  We really would love for you to come and we need your input!  Our goal is to come up with a solid fundraiser plan by the end of the night!

Movie Night is on October 18th! Hotel Transylvania will be showing at 6pm, doors will open at 5:30pm.  Tickets are $1 per person and there will be goodies and dinner options available to purchase to enjoy during the movie!  Be on the lookout for the flyer coming home!

Book Fair is coming soon!  Look for the flyer with the times and days we will be open.  It will be held in our Library on October 21st through the 25th.  We also are having an online fair for those who can't make it in or for family and friends out of town.  It will be from October the 16th through November 5th.  To visit our online fair, just click the following link: http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/kelsoelemsch

Box Tops!!!  Keep clipping them and sending them in!  This is just another way of earning our school money! The last day for them to be counted toward the contest is October 30th!

Saturday with Santa!!! We are looking for vendors who would be interested in having a booth at Saturday with Santa on December 14th.  For more information or an application, please contact Breanna Nickila at 503-750-9545 or kccsecr@gmail.com.

We are looking for parents who are interested in doing a craft for winter workshop.  For more information please contact Alicia Davis at 503-539-5795 or preskcc@gmail.com

For the month of October the yearbook is $8.99!  If you haven't purchased a yearbook yet, now is a great time to do so.  Go to www.treering.com.  If you haven't logged in yet, you will need our school's passcode: 101349464104368.  Feel free to login and add pictures that you have taken in school, this will only increase the chances of your child's picture being in the yearbook.  If you would like to see updates on the yearbook, you can follow the KCC on Facebook!
