PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear Baldwin Families,

As you will read a little further below, this week is Digital Citizenship Week. On September 30th, may of our staff members participated in a presentation by Kristen Berg, our district technology teacher on special assignment, on what we can do to better promote digital citizenship at school. While most of our students don't have a facebook profile, many of our older students are starting to become familiar with apps like Snap Chat and Instagram. Our younger students are very excited to have access to technology, but should be reminded that their passwords to programs at school are personal and shouldn't be shared with friends. For teachers, parents, and principals, it is important for us to think about the digital footprint we leave behind. Remember these simple pieces of advice: Think before we post, check privacy settings, deactivate and delete old accounts, and search ourselves online from time to time.

To learn more about leaving a positive digital foot print, CLICK HERE TO VISIT THE SRVUSD DIGITAL FOOTPRINT TOOLKIT

As always, thank you for your continued partnership in your child's education.

RED RIBBON WEEK HH Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon week is a time to educate the children on the importance of making smart choices, and to celebrate John Baldwin being drug free!  A member of the Danville Police Department will come speak to grades 1-5 on Tuesday 10/25 and focus on "4 qualities of a good choice."  Please encourage your children to participate in the fun theme days below!

10/24: We have the power to be drug free!  Be a superhero and say no to drugs!  Please have students dress as their favorite superhero.

10/25: Let's sock it to bad drugs and pledge to make good, healthy choices.  Please have students wear crazy, mismatched or sporty socks.

10/26: We have the power to make healthy choices and stay drug free!  AND it's "walk and roll" to school day!  Please have students walk or bike/scooter to school together in support of taking care of our bodies.  Let's all wear red!

10/27: Our future is bright!  No drugs in sight!  Please have students wear neon or bright colors

10/28: John Baldwin is proud to be drug free!  Please have students wear JB colors

JOG-A-THON 2016: Wednesday, November 9

It's time to start gearing up for our annual Jog-A-Thon again! I know we just ran for the SRVEF Run for Education, so let's keep up the momentum and KEEP RUNNING!!

On Wednesday, November 9th JB students will walk, jog, and run to raise money for all of the programs supported by Cougar Education Fund, like Art, Music, P.E., Library, Reading and Math Intervention specialists, and many more!

Our goal is to raise $28,850 this year. That's only a $50 pledge per student! And all of the money earned goes right back to benefiting YOUR kids this school year! But they'll need your support!

Students will be asking friends and family to sponsor them for this fun event. And we're SUPER excited to be offering our online pledge website, The Get Movin' Crew, again this year to make fundraising even easier! You will be able to send pledge requests to friends and family near and far using social media!

To sign up, click here: www.thegetmovincrew.com

Students should have brought home more information with pledge forms and detailed instruction on how to make your student's online pledge page. It's super easy and takes 2 minutes to do!

Please help us spread the excitement about this fun-filled, healthful event!!
Can't wait to see you on the track! Go Cougars!
If you have any questions, please contact Michelle Beckham.
2016 Digital Citizenship Week is coming up October 16-22!

As an SRVUSD Digital Citizenship Committee partner, San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs helps to raise awareness about Digital Citizenship and increase family engagement in positive online habits.

The 2016 SRVUSD Digital Citizenship theme is "Digital Footprints". Did you know everything posted online leaves behind a footprint? A few of the ways we can shape this digital footprint are:

*         Thinking before we post

*         Checking privacy settings

*         Deactivating and deleting

*         Searching ourselves online

To make it easy for everyone to participate in the Digital Footprint conversation, SRVUSD has created a toolkit for schools, students, and parents. This webpage has ideas of how to get involved, as well as sample messaging and images. http://www.digitalsrvusd.net

Legislative Advocacy: Election Season is upon us!

To be eligible to vote in the Nov. 8th election, you must be registered by October 24, 2016. In Contra Costa County, you can register online. For information about the upcoming election, please visit the Contra Costa County Elections Division.

Contra Costa County is actively seeking poll workers to help with the November 8 election. If you would like to apply, please complete the poll worker application. Students may also apply (subject to meeting eligibility criteria).

The November 8 ballot is crowded. There are 17 ballot measures for you to consider. One of the purposes of PTA is to secure adequate laws for children and youth. This entails law making at all levels, including ballot measures.  California State PTA has carefully researched the ballot measures and has taken a "SUPPORT" position on five of them.  For space reasons, we have chosen to only list here the proposition number and title.  To read PTA's short rationale on each, as well as links for more information, refer to the full Legislative Advocacy article.

BARTON READING AND SPELLING

Barton Reading and Spelling program is up and running, serving our Baldwin Cougars. Thank you to our five tutors generously giving of their time to these children. We have more students who would benefit from this program, so we need additional tutors. Do you think you would be interested in being trained to tutor a student twice a week for 45 minutes each session?  We're setting up our next training opportunity and will reserve a space for you.

Email Margaret Hart for additional information on the rewards of being a Barton tutor or to sign up for Baldwin's program.

Go to bartonreading.com to learn about this valuable nationwide program.
Coffee with the Superintendent

Meet San Ramon Valley Unified School District's new Superintendent Rick Schmitt at our "Coffee with the Superintendent" John Baldwin Elementary School on December 7, 2016 at 8:45am in the MPR.  At this coffee, the Superintendent will share a little about his priorities, the District's "Framework for Excellence" and his philosophy.  What Mr. Schmitt most appreciates is hearing from parents and one of his priorities is two-way communication.  He always walks away from these meetings having learned new, interesting and important information.

The Superintendent will be meeting with every school parent community this fall. If you can't make this event, check out
Www.srvusd.net/coffeeswithsupt for details of other meetings. If you have questions, please email his Executive Assistant Cindy Fischer.
