| Mayor Filner Visits Bayside |

The Strength of San Diego Lies in Our Community
After just three days in office, Mayor Filner showed his support for Linda Vista by meeting with the Vietnamese Advisory Board (VAB) at Bayside Community Center.
On Wednesday, December 7, 2012 Abraham To, Chairperson of the VAB, 60 members of the Vietnamese community, along with Assistant Chief Shelley Zimmerman, Lieutenant Jerry Hara, Sergeant Thomas Sullivan, Sergeant Lisa McKean, PSO Hung Nguyen, PSO Allen Tarr, PSO Asad Mohamed and Jorge Riquelme, Executive Director of Bayside all came together to discuss current concerns about our neighborhood.
The Vietnamese Advisory Board (VAB) was established in 1994. It was a committee formed and sponsored by both the Vietnamese Advisory Committee and the San Diego Police Department's Multi-Cultural Community Relations Office. Its purpose is to act as conduit between the Vietnamese community and the San Diego Police Department in order to exchange information, concerns, thoughts and ideas to reduce the fear of crime and to improve the quality of life for more than 33,000 Vietnamese and all residents in San Diego. This was a fantastic event for Bayside. The VAB meets monthly at Bayside. |

Volunteers at Bayside Community Center

Thank You Volunteers
Volunteers donated 10,308 hours of their time to Bayside Community Center from January - November 2012. According to Independent Sector the estimated national average of volunteer time is for 2011 is $21.79 an hour. This means that our wonderful volunteers donated a value of $224,611! Wow!
Bayside has the distinct pleasure of providing volunteer experiences to special needs children and adults to date there are five programs working with us.
Toward Maximum Independence program integrates work programs bringing people with developmental disabilities into volunteer work sites in the community. We have two groups from this organization who help us with general building maintenance and with our senior lunch program.
Students from the Kearny High School's Workability program join us each Tuesday and these students help with shredding and filing and other light office duties.
The Sam & Rose Stein Education Center serves students with developmental disabilities such as autism as well as students with emotional disorders and behavioral concerns. These students visit Bayside on a regular basis and volunteer by picking up litter on our grounds.
We also partner with the Trace Program at San Diego Unified School District. Students from this program have adopted our Kelly Street sidewalk garden. Each Friday this group stops by the center to weed, water and lay mulch.
For information on how you, your company or your organization can volunteer at Bayside Community Center, send an email to the volunteer coordinator at volunteer@baysidecc.org.

Environmental Sustainability at Bayside
|
San Diego Gas and Electric Grant Support Bayside has received funding from San Diego Gas and Electric to support our environmental programs. The Green Futures grant gives our Mission Possible program the opportunity to expose 45 Linda Vista high school students to innovative green careers. Four guest speakers presented interactive information about the importance of sustainable careers, how to get involved in green volunteering and internships and how to pursue such a career after graduation. The following experts made a presentation: Priscilla Parker, Marine Biodiversity and Conservation from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, Michael Kempa, Director of Sustainable Solutions, Global Energy Strategy and Marketing with Honeywell Building Solutions, Sharon Allen from the California Center for Sustainable Energy and Michael Catanzaro from the Office of Sustainability at the University of San Diego. In addition, a select group of students have been chosen to participate in a six week volunteer internship at Bayside to learn about reducing EC02 emissions to be taught by Michael Kempa. The students will not only learn a marketable skill, but they will also have the unique opportunity to assess Bayside's building. They will present their findings to us, so that we can implement changes that will assist us with sustainability. The Environmental Champions Program collaborates with Ranger Janice Lavalee and San Diego Canyonlands to remove invasive plant species and garbage from the adjacent Tecolote Canyon and to develop a zero waste training program for Linda Vista residents. Our 2013 goals include the installation of an out-door kitchen and classroom area that will bring trained nutritionists to this site to teach residents how to prepare healthier eating options. The kitchen will also be designed with a grey water sink that will utilize waste water to hydrate our garden fruit trees. |

Neighborhood House Association Nutrition Services
|
 | | Volunteer Harriet Tucker serves hot meals 5 days a week |
Senior Daily Congregate Lunch Program
Our daily lunch program provides 35-50 seniors ages 60+ with a made-from-scratch, nutritious, whole and natural meal Monday through Friday at 11:45 am. This meal is created by a registered dietitian and chef at The Neighborhood House Association Nutrition Services central kitchen and then delivered each day to Bayside. Once a month, students from University of California San Diego's (UCSD) Gluck Concert Series offer a concert for the participants of this program.
Here's what some of our seniors have to say about the program.
"Tasty and nutritious food. I could never prepare such a variety of food at home." Richard B.
"I attend the lunch, because it is a nice social place and the food is excellent." Maria S.
"I am 92 years old and can't see well enough to cook." Jim M.
We are very grateful to Neighborhood House Association for this highly successful collaboration.

Linda Vista Community Garden at Bayside

Gardener's Forecast
Fall is gone and winter has come to San Diego. As you're harvesting the very last of those summer/fall crops and begin to prepare for the winter, try this recipe for a grilled vegetable salad.
Now that harvest time is over, how will you maintain your garden in winter time? Start by cleaning and removing those unwanted weeds from your soil. This is also a great time to use the compost bin; you can throw your cuttings as well as dried leaves in the compost bin, which will break down into nutrient-rich compost for next season. But don't throw weeds or diseased cuttings into your compost!! Once your cleaning and cutting is done, it's time to give some love and care to your tools. Clean, oil, and sharpen your tools, then store them in a dry place for the winter. Finally, increase your chances for a successful winter harvest by growing crops appropriate for the season.
Here is a complete list of cool season vegetables that are great for these winter times.
If you would like to volunteer or receive more information about the Linda Vista Garden at Bayside, please contact Dalia Martin Del Campo at dmartindelcampo@baysidecc.org.

Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank Commodity Distribution Program
| |
Monthly Food Commodity Distribution
Bayside hosts a Commodity Food Distribution in collaboration with The Jacob & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. It takes place every 4th Thursday from 9-11AM. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), a food insecure household experiences periods when the household is uncertain of its ability to meet the nutrition needs of all its members because they have insufficient money or other resources for food. In the United States 48.8 million people lived in food-insecure households in 2010 including 16.2 million children.
The Linda Vista community has a very high number of food insecure households. Last month Bayside assisted 1,378 individuals and 314 households by providing 567 bags of food.
Volunteers are needed each month to help us distribute this food. We are in need of bilingual volunteers in Vietnamese to help us out.

Mark Twain High School Student Earns New Bicycle
|
Reward for perfect attendance
Area principals say that unexcused absences are more frequent these days. Unfortunately, this is in the face of some of the toughest academic challenges high school students have ever had to meet. Making school attendance a priority helps children learn good work and study habits that will serve them well now and throughout their lives.
Students in at Mark Twain High School were recognized for their good attendance record. Through a generous donation Bayside was able to provide a bicycle as a reward to the student with the best attendance this semester. Congratulations, Sierra Ksiazek on a job well done.

| givePLENTY Campaign |
Thanks to 105 generous supporters. We were able to raise over $20,000 during our givePLENTY 2 day fundraiser on December 12 and 13, 2012.
This support will help us sustain valuable and innovative programs in education, social services, food justice and environmental concerns.
If you didn't get to join us in our givePLENTY campaign you can still make a donation here. With the end of the year just days away this is an excellent opportunity to qualify for a 2012 tax year deduction.
