Bayside Family Reunion 2012
The Bayside Family Reunion 2012 celebrating 80 years event took place on Friday, September 21. It reunited many people whose lives were touched by Bayside or who made significant contributions to this unique and vibrant cultural institution.
This event brought together over 200 guests including donors, public officials, community members and partners. Bayside was presented with a letter from the office of Congresswoman Susan Davis, a resolution from the office of Assembly member Toni Atkins, and a proclamation from the office of Ron Roberts. Bernie Rhinerson, Chief of Staff for the Superintendent of San Diego Schools District, also addressed the audience. Mayoral candidates, Carl De Maio and Bob Filner were in attendance as well as representatives from the San Diego police department.
The event also celebrated Bayside's strong and abiding partnership with the University of San Diego throughout the years. Bayside honored the 25th anniversary of USD's Center for Community Service Learning program. The keynote speaker was Pamela Gray, Assistant Vice President of the Office of Public Affairs. She spoke of the enduring relationship with Bayside and announced a donation in the amount of $10,000 to the center.
Bayside's outdoor space was transformed into an intimate and elegant luncheon event. A stunning backdrop was created with Tecolote Canyon and the organic garden on one end and a colorful mural on the back wall of the center on the other. This striking work was the inspiration of artist Todd Schmid.
The Pizarro Brothers representing Bayside's early Italian roots, Tom Huynh singing in Chinese and Vietnamese and El Tapatio dancers and Mariachi La Barca highlighting Mexican culture, provided multicultural entertainment. The Hula Babes representing the Pacific Islanders greeted guests with a ukulele concert.
The luncheon also celebrated the Sisters of Social Service who founded Bayside in 1932. Sister Ellen Hunter and Sister Merita Dekat honored Bayside with their presence. This group, founded in Hungary in 1908, has pioneered the role of religious women worldwide addressing social concerns and social justice.
Thank you to all our sponsors and guests for their generous support!

Bayside Kids Spend a Week at Camp Oliver
|
 | | Camp Oliver Bound |
Summer Fun at Camp Oliver
In the summer, Camp Oliver provided "Camperships" to seven children from the Linda Vista community, inviting them to an action-packed week away from home. For many, this would be their first time away from their families, so one can only imagine their anticipation and excitement.
Camp Oliver is a nonprofit campsite located near the beautiful Cleveland National Forest and the Cuyamaca State Parks. As soon as the kids arrived, they were whisked away to participate in a plethora of fun-filled outdoor activities.
As it was "Super Hero Week," each of the campers were asked to imagine what kind of super hero they would be. They shared their super hero name and special powers with their fellow campers. Aracely, one of the Linda Vista children who attended the camp, created the super hero, "Firefly." This super hero was able to fly and shoot fire (to help with lighting the campfire, of course).
Many children participated in the "Super Talent Show" to show off their special skills and capabilities. The children then collectively cast votes to award their fellow camper with a special title-Aracely was voted the one who smiled the most.
Upon their return they gave glowing reviews of their experiences and the friendships they made. The happy campers shared wonderful stories detailing their adventures, such as hiking, swimming, sports and stargazing (they saw many shooting stars!). They even had an outdoor movie night. They also participated in choreographed dances and singing around the campfire at night. Aracely loved swimming in the refreshing pool.
The program was made possible through a collaboration with Bayside and the Sisters of Social Service. These children were given a wonderful opportunity to experience nature firsthand, develop many innovative skills and interests, and to create everlasting memories. They are all eager to go back next year!

Linda Vista & Carson Elementary Act Out
|
Bringing Literacy to Life The community theatre class at the University of San Diego is bringing a fun interactive theatre program to second and third graders in Linda Vista. This is an inter-generational program between college students and elementary school students. Stories are read and acted out and these young students get to create their own plays. This great partnership helps build reading comprehension, creates another way for students to get excited about literacy, and builds self-esteem. It also explores how theatre can serve, support and enhance the process of culture and community while exposing young students to the world of theatre arts. Bayside's commitment to arts and culture is strongly reflected in this program.

Students Get Fresh Fruit for the Weekend
|
T.G.I.F. Thank Goodness It's Food-Day
Our newest program TGIF supports healthy food options for 2nd and 3rd graders who are participating in Bayside's after school program located at Kit Carson and Linda Vista Elementary. Every Friday,
students receive a bag of food containing items such as fruits, vegetables, proteins and grains. This program serves to educate families about healthy eating while also assisting them over the weekend when free or reduced-price lunches at school are not available. Since the program began at the beginning of the school year, we have distributed over 700 pounds of fresh food.
In addition to the students receiving fresh fruit, we are also providing fresh fruit and bread during our Tuesday Emergency Food Distribution hours. With the addition of our new Food Pantry we were able to distribute over 2,178 pounds of food since early of July to members of the Linda Vista community.

Civically-engaged education and training, environmental health, food-justice, watershed management and pollution prevention will be addressed. This project will include increasing additional land use for food production, native species restoration including four trees and bioswale creation. Local residents will be assuming positions of influence in the community garden and canyon land activities.

What is Plaza Comunitaria?
| |
Adult Education Continues
Bayside now offers a computer class to Spanish speaking Linda Vista adults. This basic computer class is taught by Catherine Nicklen a graduate student of International Relations at the University of California San Diego. Luckily, 15 volunteers from the University of San Diego's Advanced Spanish conversation class are helping to bridge the technological divide that is apparent in low income neighborhoods. This program teaches how to set up an email, search the web, social media and other important web-based tools. Many students in the class have children in schools where the trend has been to communicate electronically between teacher and parent. By obtaining computer skills, parents and students will both benefit.
Learning how to use these computers can also open the door to higher education. A program called Plaza Comunitaria which is an adult education program sponsored by the Mexican government offers assistance to adults wishing to finish complete their elementary, middle and high school education. Bayside offers a computer lab where participants can access the materials and resources they need in order to successfully complete the program and receive their certificates/diplomas from the Mexican Ministry of Public Education.
For more information about this program, please contact Catherine Nicklen at cnicklen@baysidecc.org or 858-278-0771 Ext 3010.

Adopt-A-Senior Kick Off
|
Holiday Adopt-A-Senior Program
Last year, Bayside kicked off an amazing new program called Adopt-A-Senior. This program aims to lift the spirits of home bound seniors by donating a holiday gift bag to senior citizen. As many of us know the holiday season can be a difficult time for those who live alone. Statistics show that one third of older Americans live alone and 25% of these individuals are low income and in poor health. This program will continue this year.
Drop off will begin November 5, 2012 and end on December 14, 2012. Adhering to this deadline will ensure prompt and timely delivery of the gift to the recipients.
Gift bags may be dropped off between the hours of 8am and 4pm Monday through Friday at the front reception desk at: Bayside Community Center 2202 Comstock Street San Diego, CA 92111.
Please fill out this form and email it to baysideinfo@baysidecc.org with the subject line Adopt A Senior if you are interested in participating in this program.

| Bayside's Advocacy Efforts |
Bayside's Contributes to Quality of Life Issues by Advocating for Democratic Governance
Bayside is committed to being a leader in meeting the needs of the community and we serve as a catalyst for change. In the area of civic engagement and advocacy, Bayside played a prominent role giving a voice to populations that are left out of discussions in areas that impact their quality of life. At the same time we create awareness of the importance of including Linda Vista in regional forums.
Our advocacy efforts range from simply making suggestions to attempting to influence a decision. We have engaged in advocacy by meeting with elected officials, providing testimonies at public hearings and City Council, collaborating with public and private organizations on issues of mutual concern, doing media campaigns, posting messages using social media, speaking at community events, participating in local councils of decision-making such as planning groups, advisory committees, and school site councils, etc.
We advocate for issues, for people and for our community. Here are some examples of our efforts:
- Mobilizing vulnerable populations from Linda Vista (e.g., minorities, low income and seniors) to provide meaningful feedback to the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) 2050 Regional Transportation Plan.
- Being a leading voice for Linda Vista during the Redistricting Hearings and opposing the division of Linda Vista into different council districts.
- Joining the Community Budget Alliance to make the City budget process fair and equitable to all San Diegans.
- Providing testimony at City Council opposing a measure to permanently allocate a fixed amount of Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) public services to any one use.
- Joining San Diego Unified School District's Latino Advisory Committee to make sure that English learners receive a quality education.
We remain committed to advocating for quality of life issues. We are currently spearheading an effort to make Linda Vista a walkable community with a focus on pedestrian safety and we are also looking at ways that zoning can be modified to create economic opportunities for local communities.
