Dear Bayside Friend,
It gives me great joy to share with you some of the many accomplishments of Bayside Community Center this past fiscal year (July 2011-June 2012). I am happy to share the 4th edition of the Bayside Buzz which completes a full year of our new electronic quarterly newsletter!
Two major events book-ended the year: On July 21, 2011 we held the groundbreaking ceremony of our community garden and on June 14, 2012 we dedicated a new food pantry. The garden has allowed the community to follow the journey of a seed to the vegetable on their plates and their connection to better health.
The food pantry is a response to the growing demand for emergency food assistance. With the addition of this new structure we hope to not only service more people, but also increase their awareness of other healthy food options like the Linda Vista Farmer's Market. Both the garden and the food pantry are part of a continuum of a food security system available to our community.
Like so many other nonprofit organizations facing the challenge of drastic cuts to public funding, we have adapted to do more with less. Yet, we have also made changes to move beyond survival mode. Thanks to a dedicated team, Bayside has succeeded in increasing and diversifying its sources of funding in order to continue offering high quality services and programs that are available to all.
This year marks our 80th anniversary (1932-2012), we invite you to join us as partners in investing in our mission. The new fiscal year (July 2012-June 2013) promises to be more exciting than the one that we just completed.
There is plenty to be proud of: last year's remarkable achievements and next year's plans for growth. All this is possible thanks to the dedicated members of the Bayside team: board, staff, volunteers and donors. Each exemplifies the values by which we carry out our mission: collaboration, compassion, excellence, inclusiveness, integrity, respect and trust. The leadership of the Board of the Directors has been outstanding. I wish to take this opportunity to thank two of our retiring board members: Corky Marbury and Grover Diemert. At the same time, I welcome our three newest board members: Antonio Barbosa, Staci Beavers and Aiko Yamakawa.
Thank you for your continued support of Bayside Community Center! I look forward to seeing you at our September 21, 2012 Family Reunion.
Best regards,
Jorge Riquelme

Thank
you to the San Diego Women's Foundation
San Diego June, 2012 -- Bayside Community Center is pleased to announce it has been chosen as one of five local nonprofits to receive a grant from The San Diego Women's Foundation in the 2012 grant year. The grant of $27,500 will support the Academic Club program. The official announcement was made at the foundation's grant celebration at the Francis Parker Middle and Upper School on June 5. This year's grants were awarded to nonprofits working in the field of education.
In accepting this award, Jorge Riquelme of Bayside Community Center commented: "The Academic Club program focuses on providing support to 2nd and 3rd grade students, who have scored below average on standardized tests, gain a solid foundation in the English language. The Educational Coordinator along with volunteers provides homework help, parent workshops, and assistance in reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, writing and test preparation. This program is currently only offered at Carson Elementary; this grant will allow us to expand to a second location at Linda Vista Elementary. We are very happy to receive this support."
"We are extremely pleased to award these funds to such an impressive list of committed and accomplished nonprofit organizations," said Teresa Jacques, Board President of the San Diego Women's Foundation. "Our grantees truly embrace this year's theme: education can't wait for someday. We have no doubt that these extraordinary organizations will help create a better San Diego through their educational programs."
This year marks the 12th year of granting for The San Diego Women's Foundation, and brings the organization's total to $2.3 million in grants awarded to 63 deserving organizations. Recipients are selected through a rigorous vetting process and each grant totals $25,000 or greater. Grant focus areas rotate each year.
Through the San Diego Women's Foundation, more than 200 members pool their dollars together to help fund the causes that matter most to San Diego, proving the philosophy embraced by each member: women can do more than woman.

New Food Pantry Serves More
Bayside Community Center hosted a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for its new Community Pantry. The event held on June 14th was a great success due to the presence and contribution of Bayside's partners: J. Scofield "Scody" Hage, CEO of the San Diego Food Bank, Jennifer Gilmore, Executive Director of Feeding America, and Susan Hall, Founder and Executive Director of The Angel's Depot. The message of each of these committed partners resonated with Bayside's Mission of empowering the diverse Linda Vista community to improve its quality of life through services, education, and advocacy.
Congresswoman Susan Davis gave closing remarks and congratulated Bayside Community Center on its work and continued efforts to serve the needs of community residents. The Ribbon Cutting was led by Dan Kelly of the Lions Club of San Diego, whose generous donation made the construction of the new pantry possible.
This event launched Bayside's newly expanded emergency food distribution program. Not only will it serve more people with more products, it will also be offering a more holistic approach to the needs of these community members. New programs in healthy living will be implemented this year. Stay tuned for more information.

Tecolote Canyon Clean Up
| Volunteers Making A Difference
Over 50 volunteers helped clear out a neglected portion of Tecolote Canyon in Linda Vista for a total of 7 hours on April 20th. Future plans hope to include creating a trail from Bayside Community Center to Kelly Park, so that residents can experience the natural beauty of this gorgeous canyon. Thank you to LISC, Park Ranger Janice Lavallee, Americorps, the US Navy, Montgomery Middle School students, and many other residents of Linda Vista for your tireless efforts in completing this project! Together we filled a 30 foot dumpster full of garbage, concrete and invasive plant species.

Bayside Social Network Neighborhood
| Seniors Go Wireless
Seniors currently involved with our Senior STEPS program, were invited to participate in a new pilot program called the Bayside Social Network Neighborhood. This Motorola sponsored program goal is to introduce homebound seniors to the world of email, web browsing, social media and online video chat. By teaching these skills to our Linda Vista seniors they are able to more easily access health information, keep in contact with their family and friends and expand their interest and knowledge of the world of technology. Instructor Mary Prine and an instructor from the San Diego Futures Foundation along with many bilingual volunteers from Bank of America have met with these seniors for what was originally scheduled to be a 6 week class. The class was then extended another 6 weeks, because the seniors were so excited about what they were learning. Each senior was given their very own laptop that they could use while in class and also bring home. In addition, Bayside arranged with AT&T for a discounted internet connection in each of their homes. |
