WEST MERCER ANNOUNCEMENTS

Thank You!

Yee-haw!! A big THANK YOU to Yvonne Peters for organizing such a whippersnappin' Hoedown!!  Tons of city-slickers, young and old, didn't stop kickin' till the clock stopped clickin'.  Thanks to all that attended and to our great volunteers!

Thank you--to all of the students who participated in our Spirit Days! Supporting our Seahawks together was a fun way to build community!
Did You Know?
3 Fast Facts about our amazing West Mercer PTA!

PTA Grants
Did you know that thanks to your yearly donations West Mercer PTA is able to offer grants to teachers for school and classroom items and programs? This year our grant program will provide writing support through an innovative program and enable an additional exciting field trip for third graders to the Snoqualmie Indian Tribe at Beaver Lake. In addition, grants will replace worn gym mats, provide new dictionaries and poetry books, and supply important everyday classroom items including organizational materials, an easel, beanbag chairs, and Hokki stools.  Our PTA Grant program has a profound impact at West Mercer. THANK YOU!

Art at West Mercer
Unlike many schools around us who have eliminated their art program for lack of funding, art is alive and well at West Mercer.  Did you know that without the West Mercer PTA, the art program -based on a grade appropriate curriculum and led by the many dedicated art docents and parent volunteers who assist in the classroom every month for art projects- would not exist?  With your PTA contributions and the volunteering of an amazing group of parents, every student in every classroom at West Mercer has the opportunity to learn about artists throughout history and to create art. Clay is an all time favorite. Students have the ability to touch, mold, create and glaze their own personal art piece. Our Kiln master, a dedicated parent volunteer whose name is Pam Shavey, procures hundreds of pounds of heavy clay and glaze throughout the year bringing it to West Mercer for all the projects. In addition, she also fires every clay piece in a kiln at school after it is made as well as after it is glazed. To provide this unique element of our art program, it takes Pam, it takes many art docents who spend countless hours preparing for art lessons and art projects and it takes a very hardworking PTA village.  On behalf of our kids thank you for keeping the art program alive at our school.

School Clubs
Drum group, Choir, Homework Club, Boks, Peer Mediator Group, Reading Group, KFN, Destination Imagination...We have many wonderful clubs at our school that are led by dedicated teachers and staff. These clubs provide a nurturing place for our kids, an outlet for them to be themselves, to learn about a new skill, find academic or social support as well as friendship.  The teachers and staff who lead these clubs each receive a stipend from our PTA. Thanks to your PTA donations we are able to finance these important extra-curriculcum activities for our children.

West Mercer Non-Competitive and Competitive Spelling Bees

February 25 and March 4 at 2PM

We are very excited to be hosting both a non-competitive and a competitive spelling bee this year at West Mercer. Our hope is that this will encourage our students to improve their spelling (partly by reading more), increase their vocabularies and develop and implement proper usage of English for the rest of their lives.

For more information about these events, click here.  To register your child, please complete and submit this form.

Lists of spelling words which can be studied in preparation for the bees can be found here and here

This is a PTA-sponsored event and volunteers are needed.  If you have questions or concerns or would like to help, please contact Jocelyn Barber.

Parent Edge

MI Parent Edge Presents the Film,

"The Mask You Live In"

7 p.m., Thursday, March 5 at MIHS PAC

How can we raise a healthier generation of boys and young men?

From the Directors of "Miss Representation," comes a film exploring masculinity in America. The Mask You Live In follows boys and young men as they struggle to be true to themselves. Pressured by their peers, adults, and the media, boys learn to disconnect from emotions, devalue friendships, objectify women, and resolve conflict through violence. Gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance to create a maze of identity issues boys must face in order to become "real" men. See film trailer HERE.

Please join Parent Edge as we present this anticipated film, followed by a discussion.

This event is for parents of kids of all ages; students in grades 8-12 are encouraged to attend.

FREE for MI students and staff, $5 per family for MI PTA members.

MI Parent Edge is jointly sponsored by the PTAs of Lakeridge, Island Park, West Mercer, Islander Middle, MIHS and St. Monica schools.
