West Mercer Non-Competitive and Competitive Spelling Bees
February 25 and March 4 at 2PM
We are very excited to be hosting both a non-competitive and a competitive spelling bee this year at West Mercer. Our hope is that this will encourage our students to improve their spelling (partly by reading more), increase their vocabularies and develop and implement proper usage of English for the rest of their lives.
For more information about these events, click here. To register your child, please complete and submit this form.
Lists of spelling words which can be studied in preparation for the bees can be found here and here.
This is a PTA-sponsored event and volunteers are needed. If you have questions or concerns or would like to help, please contact Jocelyn Barber.

Friday morning MI Running Club returns this week! Please note the (new) start date! 3rd, 4th and 5th graders are invited to join fellow Islanders from Island Park, West Mercer, and Lakeridge Elementaries for a half hour of heart pumping exercises, drills and running. Beginning on January 23, we meet at the IMS track at 8:25 and MISD school buses will take you to your respective school at 8:55 (Lakeridge students will walk). This club is a free, non-competitive way to fire up your brain and body for school. Every level of runner is welcome to join as long as you wear warm running clothes, running shoes and bring with you a good attitude. We gear up for the MI Rotary Run 5k on March 22, but even if you don't want to participate in that event, you are welcome to join us for the Friday morning runs. The first kids to attend 3 practices will earn a MI Running Club sweatshirt. Parent volunteers who like to run are welcome and encouraged to join us if your schedule permits.
When: Friday mornings 8:25-8:55
Duration: Jan. 23 - March 20 (depending on interest level we may continue after Spring Break). However, there will be no practice on February 13 or Feb 20.
Where: IMS track
Cancellations: Rain or snow cancels practice
Sign up: email Susan to be included in email updates and submit the signed waiver by the first practice your child attends
Cost: FREE (although if you decide to do the MI 5K, there is a registration fee)
