AFTER SCHOOL CLUBS
Art Club
The West Mercer PTA sponsors tuition-based after school art classes at West Mercer. These classes meet once a week at West Mercer, immediately after school, and are available to students in first through fifth grade. These clubs allow those students with a special in interest in the visual arts to pursue this interest further.

Lego Club

LEGO Enrichment Program at West Mercer
West Mercer will be offering after school Lego Classes through Play-Well Technology. They will be held after school from 3:45-5:15pm on Tuesday or Thursday depending on the class. Please sign up using the links below. Don't hesitate, the classes fill up quickly!

 

Pre-Engineering using LEGOŽ (K-1st Grade)
Tuesdays, September 30th - November 25th from 3:45PM-5:15PM
Let your imagination run wild with tens of thousands of LEGOŽ! Build engineer-designed projects such as boats, bridges, mazes and motorized cars, and use special pieces to create your own unique design! Explore the endless creative possibilities of the LEGOŽ building system with the guidance of an experienced Play-Well instructor. This is an ideal way to prepare young builders for the challenge of Engineering FUNdamentals.

Engineering FUNdamentals using LEGOŽ (2nd-5th Grade)
Tuesdays, October 2nd - November 20th from 3:45PM-5:15PM
Power up your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and tens of thousands of LEGOŽ! Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as arch bridges, skyscrapers, motorized cars, and the Battletrack! Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment. An experienced instructor will challenge new and returning students to engineer at the next level.

Chess Club 
When: Mondays after school. 3:30 to 4:30 PM.  9/22 to 11/24

Where:
West Mercer Elementary School

Who should attend:
K-5th Grade.  Any student interested in learning or increasing their knowledge of chess and learning life skills.

Benefits:
Chess study has shown to increase math skills, concentration, memory, and self-confidence.

Instructors:
Chess4Life instructors work closely under the guidance of National Chess Master Elliott Neff. All instructors follow the coaching methods that were developed by Elliott over the past 20 years in training multiple students and teams to both state and national titles (including the 2005, 2008 and 2009 National Elementary K-5 Championship Team).

Material Covered:
Classes are tailored to the level of competency exhibited among the students. Classes typically include: basic principles and strategy of how to open a chess game, how to conduct the middle game, and how to win (or avoid losing) in the endgame. Many other basic to advanced level tactics are also taught, including visualization techniques and tournament practice.

Destination Imagination
We are beginning another exciting year of Destination Imagination.  This is open to any student in grades four or five.  Please come to the parent meeting on Sept. 17 at 6:30pm in Room 14 at West Mercer.

MI SCHOOL DISTRICT FALL ACTIVITIES
MIHS Fall Little Cheer Football Clinic
The Little Cheer Clinics are taught by the Mercer Island High School Varsity Cheer squad.  The participants learn cheers and have the opportunity to cheer at the MIHS Football game on Friday, September 26th.

The clinic dates/times are as follows:

Tuesday, September 16 in the Islander Middle School gym from 5pm to 6pm
Wednesday, September 17 in the Islander Middle School gym from 5pm to 6pm
Friday, September 26 in the MIHS West gym check-in from 6pm to 6:45pm
Friday, September 26 MIHS Stadium from 6:45pm to halftime at the Game
