A FEW ITEMS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Staff Appreciation Week  - On behalf of the entire Island Park Staff, thank you to everyone who sent notes of gratitude, flowers and treats during staff appreciation week. The May 6 staff luncheon was especially nourishing, both in tasty cuisine and feelings of community support. Please know that your appreciation and support is reciprocated.

Staffing Update - We are excited to share that 5th Grade teacher, Eileen Brecha, has been offered, and accepted, the opportunity to teach at a Hong Kong international school next year. We are equally excited to share that her replacement will be Kristin "Krissy"  Babson. Krissy will be moving to the Seattle area from Chelmsford, Massachusetts where she has taught intermediate grades for 16 years. She is looking forward to being closer to her extended family and is excited to team with our fabulous fifth grade cohort.

We wish our resource room teacher, Allison Janshen, continued success as she moves to Northwood Elementary where she will continue her responsibilities as resource room teacher.  Heidi Conradt, current special education teacher at Lakeridge, will assume Allison's Island Park resource room position. Heidi comes with glowing references and a reputation for great work with students and families.

A final updated list of next year's staff, as well as those who are moving on to Northwood or other opportunities, will be shared at the end of the year.

Islandwood Camp - Thank you to all our fifth grade families for supporting our annual Islandwood outdoor education program. Special kudos to camp chaperones, The Island Park PTA and our amazing fifth grade teachers; their support, planning and endless positive energy produced a terrific learning experience for all. Finally, thanks to our great fifth graders for their stellar participation and behavior.

Fourth Grade families, mark your calendars now! We are schedule to attend Islandwood next year from February 27 through March 2, 2017.

Respectfully,
Mr. Hoffman

We are looking for parents to "host" summer playdates for ALL grade levels this summer (2 parents per grade). These will be similar to the "come and play" Kindy playdates held at school during summer vacation each year.

Sign Up Here to facilitate your child's incoming grade level and read a little bit about the super easy opportunity to help us welcome the new children and families to Island Park.

Associate Principals Appointed for Elementary Schools

Lisa Deen and Jill Ravenscraft have been appointed as associate principals at elementary schools in the Mercer Island School District.

These appointments replace two existing interim associate principals, Kathy Morrison and Kathy Bledsoe, who both came out of retirement to assist us these past two years. With the state-mandated additional responsibilities of teacher evaluation and the opportunity for cognitive coaching, increased administrative support was needed. Deen will serve at Lakeridge and Island Park, and Ravenscraft at West Mercer and Northwood. Read more here.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER

Hello families,

As we get closer to the end of the year, I am seeing more signs of anxiety with kids as they think about all of the upcoming changes.  As parents and staff, we can help them turn their anxiety into excitement by imagining what can go right next year. We can talk to our children and say "Create the image of yourself arriving to school happy confident and ready to learn." Prepare your child for the possibility of failure and help them understand that this is a key component to learning. When they are worked up or feeling anxious, take time to focus on the moment right now. Give them calming and breathing strategies to try. Progressive muscle relaxation works great:  starting with toes, have kids slowly flex their muscles and release them, working slowly up their body finishing with their nose and forehead, it should take about 3-5 minutes.

Remember to validate your child's feelings. Acknowledging the sad feelings is a good thing. It tells the child that they helped to create something really good and special at their old school or with their class this past year. The more resistance you get when you talk about the change, that is a cue that you need to do more validating of their feelings. Once a child feels more validated and heard then change will be easier to discuss change and it is often a seesaw effect. Help your child find allies and remind them many of them are in the same boat.

Meet other parents and children, set up separate casual play dates with all of the kids in your child's class throughout the year or arrange to meet up families at a park at some point. Join the PTA, clubs, sports activities. Remember to breathe deeply, this is yet another adventure in our lives!

Heartfully,
Ms. Liana
