Music Room Piano and Recorder Recitals and Volunteers

Congratulations on a job well done to all the students who performed in the music piano and recorder recitals last week! And thank you to all the family members who were able to attend the recitals... your encouragement and applause made the events all the more special.

I am especially grateful to the many parent volunteers who gave up an hour or more per week to provide positive feedback and encouragement to the students as they practiced their instruments. We are so excited to announce that this year we will have an Island Park PTA Talent Show! What a great opportunity to celebrate the skills we are so lucky to have in our school!

We encourage all budding singers, dancers, comedians, musicians, performers (jugglers, gymnasts, etc), or students with any other amazing talents to audition for our very first talent show! We are also looking for a Master of Ceremonies - come to the auditions with a Talent Show welcoming script.

Some guiding details:
  • Each act should be 2 minutes or less and performances must be school appropriate. Group and individual acts welcome!
  • Applications are requested by December 18th but due January 7th
  • Students will audition January 13th and attend 3 rehearsals
  • One parent volunteer per act will be the group's lead parent to share information, ensure participation, receive and distribute emails, etc.
  • We would love parent volunteers to assist!
This is an Island Park PTA sponsored event. All proceeds will go towards fundraising efforts for our Island Park paraeducator learning support program.

A Word From the Library

Greetings Island Park Families! We have three big events coming up in the library!

The first event is our Lemoncello Book Release.
Mr. Lemoncello's Library Olympics by Chris Grabenstein will be released on January 5th, 2016. Students have the opportunity to pre-order a copy through Island Books. Please make sure to let Island Books know the copy will be for Island Park. The books will be distributed at a "Lemoncello Book Release Event" on January 8th.  There will be games and a chance to win a copy of the book.

Our next event is an author visit! The Mercer Island Schools Foundation and our PTA have graciously funded an author visit to Island Park.
We are still working on dates for a visit from Paul Owen Lewis. He is the author of Frog Girl, Storm Boy and Davy's Dream. Our third grade students read his books during their unit on folk tales. We are very excited to have him share his enthusiasm for writing and his knowledge of the writing process.

And finally, the first week of February will be our Scholastic Book Fair!
The book fair is a great way to raise money for our library and get books in kids' hands. We will need volunteers to help with stocking shelves and helping kids choose books. Please let me know if you are available.

I hope you all have a wonderful, safe and relaxing break!

What Shall We Give the Children?

What shall we give the children?
Holidays are almost here.
Toys and games and playthings,
As we do every year?

Yes, for the magic of Toyland
Is part of the Yuletide lore
To gladden the heart of childhood
But I shall give something more.

I shall give them patience,
A more sympathetic ear,
A little more time for laughter,
Or tenderly dry a tear.

I shall take the time to teach them
The joy of doing some task.
I'll try to find time to answer
More of the questions they ask;

Time to read books together,
And take long walks in the sun.
Time for a bedtime story
After the day is done.

I shall give these to my children,
Weaving a closer tie,
Knitting our lives together
With gifts that money can't buy.
