David Hoffman PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
As we continue our work as a learning community to learn about, utilize and celebrate the wonderful diversity found in our schools, I thought a reprint of one of my first newsletters might be appropriate.

The Thanksgiving Gift

I did not attend a traditional elementary school until I was in third grade. My early primary school years were spent in a series of cottages nestled in a wooded area located down a white, rocky road about a half-mile from my Omaha home. The cottages were part of a larger school district. A select group of students attended them due to traffic concerns and space limitations in the larger elementary school. There were fourred cottages: a kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and a final cottage that remained somewhat of a mystery to us. Each cottage, once a single family dwelling, had been converted into a single-room classroom. The bungalow-type house consisted of two floors: a vacuous upstairs with beautiful Maplewood floors and a cold, gray concrete basement where, in the wintertime we played games in our coats and mittens. Each cottage had a private driveway where the milk truck pulled in each morning to deliver a steel crate filled with pint-sized cartons. The milk was always tepid by the time lunch rolled around.
My memories of the cottages, like the milk, remain warm. It was in those small, one-room schools where I developed my love for learning and an appreciation for diversity. The latter was especially nurtured when I was in first grade. It happened on the day before Thanksgiving in that fourth, mysterious cottage.
We rarely saw anyone enter the fourth cottage or, for that matter, leave. You can imagine my surprise then when my teacher, Mrs. Bach, asked if I would walk over to cottage four and bring its occupants a small box of empty glass baby food jars and lids. I probably felt pretty important knowing that Mrs. Bach entrusted me with glass jars, but I'm sure I felt equally apprehensive about approaching that unfamiliar site. continue reading here
SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE

Dr. Gary PlanoDear Mercer Island Parents,

I can't believe it's almost Thanksgiving! The school year began in earnest with welcoming over 300 new families to our district. Many are new to our state or even to the United States. The district held a new family welcome last month, where our new families and students met with other families, some of whom we called "parent ambassadors." Many of these parent ambassadors are multi-lingual, and offered to help with school and community transitions to a new home and locale. Please help us welcome these new families to our school community when you meet them in the shops, playfields and schools.

Our enrollment is higher than in prior years. Overall we gained 33 new students district-wide over last year's total, putting enrollment at 4,256. Just since 2010, nearly 200 more students have joined our school district. Continue reading here.

Island Park PTA General Meeting
Tuesday, Nov 10, 9:10 am

Please join the Island Park PTA on Tuesday, Nov 10th at 9:10am in the IP library for our General Meeting.

At this meeting we will hear from Mindy Smith from the Committee for Mercer Island Public Schools (CMIPS), a group that is revived when a school board/levy approaches. Mindy will present information about the levies up for renewal in February. There will then be a vote to determine whether Island Park's PTA will endorse the renewal of these levies.

We will also hear from Mr Hoffman regarding new playground equipment, and upcoming conferences and report cards. Each member of our PTA Executive Committee will submit their reports and information on our PTA events scheduled for the rest of the school year will be offered.

Please contact Heather Fowler with any questions at communications@islandparkpta.org.
