A Valentine to Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship is not a foreign concept to children. Whether it is earning a little spending money through the creation of a lemonade stand, neighborhood lawn mowing service or washing a family car, kids flawlessly devise and execute business plans that, with little risk, minimal financing and, let's face it, nominal effort, bring in pocket change that hardly ever makes it to a pocket. It is usually squandered on candy, comic books or the like. In the entrepreneurial spirit, children are also good at securing allowance increases or store purchases through tactful parental negotiations and quid pro quo contractual connivances (also known during my childhood as pouting and presenting symbolic valentines promising endless love in return for the latest in-thing).

Happy Valentine's Day.

Respectfully,

David Hoffman

Calling all scientists!
Parent Volunteers needed for Science Olympiad Fun Night

We are busy planning the details for the upcoming Science Olympiad Fun Night scheduled for Tuesday, May 5 from 6:00-8:00 pm. The event will be an evening of hands-on science fun for all grades!

We will need a large number of parent volunteers to make the event a success!  Volunteers will assist with student check-in, provide support to the presenters, and serve as parent guides for the small groups during the hands-on activities.

We also want to tap into the talent we have here at Island Park as we seek facilitators for the various science activities!  Facilitators of the science activities will be provided information to science present, as well as all of the materials for the activity.

If you have a background in a science field, this is a great opportunity to share your knowledge with Island Park students!

If you have questions or are interested in volunteering, please contact Michelle Ritter at  mcodyritter@yahoo.com

Our goal is to achieve 100% donation participation from our Island Park Families.  If you have not yet donated, please consider doing so.  No donation is too small and every dollar counts.  Remember, your donation is TAX DEDUCTIBLE!  Click here to DONATE NOW!

MI Parent Edge Presents the Film, The Mask You Live In

7 p.m., Thursday, March 5 at MIHS PAC

How can we raise a healthier generation of boys and young men? From the Directors of "Miss Representation," comes a film exploring masculinity in America. The Mask You Live In follows boys and young men as they struggle to be true to themselves. Pressured by their peers, adults, andthe media, boys learn to disconnect from emotions, devalue friendships, objectify women, and resolve conflict through violence. Gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance to create a maze of identity issues boys must face in order to become "real" men. See film trailer here.

Please join Parent Edge as we present this anticipated film, followed by a discussion.

This event is for parents of kids of all ages; students in grades 8-12 are encouraged to attend.

FREE for MI students and staff - $5 per family for MI PTA members.
