                      Mathew's

My favorite holiday tradition is preserved and protected in a memory snow globe. Gently shake the orb and flakes flutter and fall onto a downtown street in Omaha, Nebraska. It is almost evening.  Holiday lights are draped between and wrapped around street lamps.  The decorations twinkle like glitter against the slate sky.  Frosted shop windows illuminate gifts and other goodies. Peer closely into the glass sphere and you will see a father gently corralling his three small children, dressed in puffy snowsuits and dangling stocking caps toward the front door of a small bookshop.  The name on the storefront reads, Mathew's Bookstore.

Superintendent's Message
December 2014
Dr. Gary Plano
It has been a busy and productive fall for the Mercer Island School District. The recently formed Boundary Committee is reviewing options for new elementary school boundaries for the four elementary schools to determine which neighborhoods attend each school beginning the fall of 2016. The Boundary Committee will host a public preview with their preliminary recommendation on Dec. 10, from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m., in the Islander Middle School library. I am hoping for a robust turnout at this public preview prior to the formal public hearing early next year.

Brunch and Browse - GREAT NEWS!!

Brunch and Browse was a wonderful success again this year, with much thanks going to Roger and Nancy Page and the staff of Island Books for hosting us. Island Park sales netted approximately $7100, with $1400 going to our PTA!!  The Island Park Library also benefits from this great event, receiving 6 books as donations. Meredith Carlson won a $50 gift card to Island books through the teacher raffle, CONGRATULATIONS!! Special thanks and appreciation to Tiffany Holland, Eydie Katz, Jamie Hochmon-Herz, Elizabeth Kaplan, and Michelle LoBosco who volunteered their time, resources and the delicious brunch bites; they were wonderful and much appreciated. I hope I was able to personally speak to and thank each of our shoppers for their time and support - it means the world to our kids. Look for a new twist on this old fav next year...

Save the Date!
Island Park Science Olympiad Fun Night
Tuesday, May 5, 2015  6-8pm
Science Fair

Mark your calendars for an evening of hands-on science fun for all grades! This year we have decided to try a new event -- the Science Olympiad Fun Night!

During the Science Olympiad Fun Night, students will be grouped in teams of three or four and will be led by a parent volunteer.  The groups will rotate through a series of three half-hour events designed to meet age-appropriate skills and knowledge bases.

This is a drop-off event, however, the Science Olympiad Fun Night will need many parent volunteers to assist the evening of the event.

Calling all scientists!  We want to tap into our Island Park parents who have a background in science fields to serve as facilitators of the science activities.  Presenters of the science activities will be provided information to present, as well as all of the materials for the activity.

If you have questions or are interested in volunteering, please contact Michelle Ritter at mcodyritter@yahoo.com

Recitals will take place in the music room during your child's regularly schedule music time. Little Dribblers 2014

Mercer Island Boys Basketball Tradition

Winter Saturday Program Dec 6th - Feb 7th

Little Dribblers is a long standing basketball tradition on Mercer Island, originally conceived and run by legendary coach Ed Pepple and continued by current head coach Gavin Cree. This program gives young kids interested in basketball a wonderful opportunity to interact with and learn from high school players and coaches. It allows high school players to share their skills and mentor these kids and indoctrinate the love of the game. Young kids adore these players and have lots of fun on the court. They learn skills which serve them well with their current teams and prepare them for future Islander basketball.

The program runs on Saturdays from December 6th thru Feb 7th
