 Principal's Message
The Conference In my ten-plus years of penning columns for school newsletters, I have never written about my junior high school experience, and for good reason. My three years in junior high can best be described as mercurial with many more cellars than summits. I liken my early 70s experience to that of visiting the dentist and having a cavity filled: inevitable, somewhat painful and, thankfully, soon forgotten. My teachers were vestiges of an archaic instructional mentality that viewed pre-teens as disrespectful, distrustful, and generally delinquent. Never mind that I was a clean-cut kid who went to school in synthetic slacks, penny loafers and a shirt buttoned up to my chin. I always felt like a non-entity, essentially endured but rarely educated. Read More. Respectfully, David Hoffman Principal |

Save the Date! Island Park Science Olympiad Fun Night
Tuesday, May 5, 2015 6-8pm
Mark your calendars for an evening of hands-on science fun for all grades! In past years, Island Park offered students the opportunity to engage in science through a traditional science fair. This year we have decided to try a new event -- the Science Olympiad Fun Night!
During the Science Olympiad Fun Night, students will be grouped in teams of three or four and will be led by a parent volunteer. The groups will rotate through a series of three half-hour events designed to meet age-appropriate skills and knowledge bases.
This is a drop-off event, however, the Science Olympiad Fun Night will need many parent volunteers to assist the evening of the event.
Calling all scientists! We want to tap into our Island Park parents who have a background in science fields to serve as facilitators of the science activities. Adding real scientists to the mix is a wonderful chance for the kids to interact with professionals in the field. Presenters of the science activities will be provided information to present, as well as all of the materials for the activity.
Registration forms and additional details about the event will be available as the date gets closer.
If you have questions or are interested in volunteering, please contact Michelle Ritter at mcodyritter@yahoo.com

Island Park Music Recitals and News
For the past several months in the music room, the children in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades have been learning melody concepts and using these concepts to play the piano or recorder.
As the culminating event to this unit, I would like to invite you and any other significant adults in your child's life to attend a classroom recital. Recitals will take place in the music room during your child's regularly schedule music time. As each student will also be assessed on their performance, please respect that no younger children will be allowed.
If you are unable to come to the recital, please feel free to visit the music room after school and have your own personal recital with your child. We hope you can join us!

Little Dribblers 2014
Mercer Island Boys Basketball Tradition
Winter Saturday Program Dec 6th - Feb 7th
Little Dribblers is a long standing basketball tradition on Mercer Island, originally conceived and run by legendary coach Ed Pepple and continued by current head coach Gavin Cree. This program gives young kids interested in basketball a wonderful opportunity to interact with and learn from high school players and coaches. It allows high school players to share their skills and mentor these kids and indoctrinate the love of the game. Young kids adore these players and have lots of fun on the court. They learn skills which serve them well with their current teams and prepare them for future Islander basketball.
The program runs on Saturdays from December 6th thru Feb 7th
Mercer Island High School Main Gym
Fee: $85
Registration online only at www.mibasketball.org .
Mercer Island FC (MIFC) is proud to announce a NEW program!
Our Fall Technical Director "TD" Friday Academy
The Fall TD Friday Academy will continue to build on MIFC's dedication and investment in player development. The Fall TD Friday Academy will be led by MIFC's own Technical Director Darren Sawatzky.
Darren Joined MIFC in 2014 to help educate coaches in proper player development. Darren led the Seattle Sounders Academy for 8 years before joining MIFC. He personally coached FIFA World Cup starter D'Andre Yedlin and Mercer Island's own US Men's National Team member Jordan Morris, as well as many other professional soccer players. Darren is one of only a few MLS academy coaches nationwide participating in the Elite Formation Coaching License program offered in partnership with the French Football Federation.
The Fall TD Friday Academy will be a fast-paced, fun filled training environment providing players with activities and games that are purposefully fun while simultaneously developing their fundamental skill base. Your child will learn the ways, and dribbling moves, of Messi, Renaldo, Dempsey, Yedlin and the likes!
The Fall TD Friday Academy is open to registered Mercer Island FC players, recreational and select, who will be broken into 3 age groups: K - 2nd, 3rd & 4th, and 5th grade and older.
