(Welcome Back to School Reflections)
The Crossroads shopping mall in Omaha, Nebraska was born the same year I was-1959. Located within walking distance of my house, I must have visited the immense indoor center hundreds of times during my childhood, carelessly spending idle hours and weekly allowances. One vivid memory of the mall occurred in 1966. My brother, sister and I were part of a crazed Crossroads crowd who waited hours to catch a glimpse of our new television idol-Batgirl. Much to our chagrin, the television actress who played the curvaceous, cowled, caped crusader appeared late, sans costume, and with an entourage who kept obscuring our view.Continue Reading

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Welcome back Island Park Families! I hope all of you have enjoyed this gorgeous summer. The first day of school is fast upon us as well as our first "Welcome Back " event. Tuesday, September 2, after drop off, we will host our Welcome Back Coffee and General PTA meeting. All are welcome, including younger kids. This is a great chance to catch up with Island Park Families, review and sign up for volunteer opportunities, meet the PTA Executive Board and hear from our principal, David Hoffman. I look forward to seeing you all there and to another great year at Island Park. Enjoy the last week of summer!

Welcome Back to School!
School starts on Tues., September 2nd!
School will be back in session on Tuesday, 9/2. Elementary start time is at 9:10 AM. Be sure to check the 2014/2013 bus schedule for times. Early release day remains on Wednesdays starting 9/3.
More Back to School information can be found on the new Mercer Island School District website, www.mercerislandschools.org! Teacher placements will be available on Skyward Family Access on August 27th. |
Kindergarten & New Family Tours
Thurs. Aug 28th, 1-3 PM 
If you have an incoming Kindergartner, or are new to Island Park this year, please join us! You and your family can take a guided tour of the school and Kindergarten children can meet their teachers. (Other grade level teachers will be in a training session and may be unavailable during the tour).

Celebrate the First Day of School at the PTA Opening Day Coffee
Tues. Sept 2nd, 9:10 am, IP MPR
 Deliver your kids to their new teachers, and then head on over to Island Park's Opening Day Coffee in the Island Park Multi-Purpose Room! Sample a few home made treats (for parents and young siblings alike), meet and reconnect with other parents, and hear from our principal, David Hoffman!
Most importantly, this is a time to learn about all of the PTA-sponsored programs and events held at Island Park throughout the year. You can meet the PTA Officers and Committee Chairs, ask questions, and sign up to volunteer to help in any areas that interest you.
This coffee will also serve as the first PTA General Membership meeting of the 2014-2015 school year. Hope you can join us! |

New School Supply Program
School supplies now come directly from the school
The MISD has streamlined the school supply ordering process across elementary schools. Supplies will now be ordered by Island Park Elementary and a fee for the supplies will be included in the Parent Pack. More information at Island Park School Supplies

Are You a New Island Park Volunteer? Attend A Volunteer Training Session
Volunteer Training Sessions Available During Curriculum Nights
 All of our volunteers at Island Park must attend a mandatory volunteer training and have a background check completed before helping at school. Please bring a photo ID, such as a drivers license or passport, to the training session.
There are many opportunities for training. Choose one of the following 1/2 hour sessions, held in the library during curriculum nights: - Tuesday Sept. 15: 5:30PM, 6:30PM & 7:30PM
- Wednesday Sept.16: 5:30PM, 6:30PM & 7:30PM
If you have already completed a training while at Island Park there is no need to repeat the training. A new background check will be run by the Main Office, and your volunteer badge from the previous year will continue to reside in the binders at the check-in station by the Main Office! |

Island Park Art Club
Fall Art Club Sessions:Tuesdays 3:30- 5:00 pm starting Sept 16- Nov 18 (no class Nov 11) Exploring Art (grades 1-3) 16 students maximum; $180 materials included. Working with a variety of art mediums (watercolor, pastel, paper, tempera, collage) children will explore different techniques and create several finished pieces. SCULPTING IMAGINARY CHARACTERS WITH CLAY
Have fun in the hands-on class exploring and creating a world of imaginary characters. Students will gain knowledge and experience learning sculptural hand-building techniques, clay tool usage, glaze applications, surface design and the kiln firing process to create a variety of freestanding ceramic sculptures. We will look at examples of different types of figurative sculpture to inspire thought and creativity. Students will be encourages to produce conceptual drawings to assist in the development of their imaginary characters.

Kids Co - Before and After School Care

Sponge Language Classes
Our highly trained, dynamic, native speaking teachers lead small classes in fun activities in the target language-Mandarin, Spanish or French. Classes are taught through games and activities, music, movement and art, as we learn practical, every-day language and communication skills.
Location: School/Room TBD. Families enroll for the entire year (9/30-5/23). Classes are offered at all three Elementary schools and busing is available between schools.

TechSmartKids
TechSmartKids classes are held at the Mercer Island Community & Events Center (MICEC). Transportation is available from all elementary schools.
