Letter from the Principal
                   Tornado Season David Hoffman

May is tornado season in the Midwest. Each year, beginning in the spring, Mother Nature unleashes her fury in the form of snake-like funnel clouds that descend from black licorice skies and wreak havoc on fields, farms and the occasional town. If you live anywhere in the Midwest, you become accustomed to the seasonal ritual of late afternoon T.V. being interrupted by mercurial meteorologists who, conflicted with excitement and concern, tell you that a storm is approaching and that Doppler radar has detected the early formation of a funnel cloud in your county. I do not like tornadoes.  I do not like the severe thunderstorms that spawn them. I question the sanity of those who chase tornadoes for sport.  My father, however, was known to leave the safety of his basement during a tornado warning to check the status of our garbage cans. Never mind that the house could be turned into a pile of splinters or that he could have ended up in Oz. As long as the garbage cans were secure, he was a happy fella'.

5th Grade Musical

  Music Notes

This year's fifth grade musical, "The Trial of the Big, Bad Wolf" uses the music and styles of the 1950s to present a comical musical in which the Wolf, a "Fonz-like" character, and his black-jacketed gang are being tried by the Three Little Pigs and their prosecuting attorney, Hogney Dangerfield. It will be presented to the Island Park community on June 5th and June 6th. Volunteers are always welcome to assist with production! More information click here...

4th Grade Try-outs for 5th Grade Band and Orchestra!

5th Grade Band and orchestra are one of those amazing opportunities provided by our district to our kids.  Your 5th grader has the chance to be a part of a music experience that can stretch through their 7 remaining years in the Mercer Island School District culminating in being a member of one of our nation's top ranked bands at Mercer Island High School.

A team of music teachers will come to your school to conduct instrument try-outs.  Your son or daughter will have the opportunity to try out two instruments of their choice.  It should be stressed that the students are not expected to be able to play any instrument on these try-out days!  The term try-out is used because the students are trying out instruments to see if they like them.  In addition, teachers will help students choose an instrument that best suits them. The goal is for the student to find an instrument that interests them, and on which they would be successful.  More Info...
Instrument try-out days:
Tuesday, May 27th-Island Park 9:30 to 12:25

From The Health Room
Together We Can Eliminate Measles

Many people in our community travel internationally to places where measles is more common. The rest of us are routinely exposed to those people. That puts all who haven't been vaccinated at risk. As a result of widespread vaccination, reported cases of measles in the US have declined in the last 50 years. However, in recent years the US saw an uptick in measles cases. Since January, 129 cases have been reported in the US. Multiple exposures have already occurred in King County this year.

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases. People can catch measles just by being in a room where an infected person had been earlier! Because measles is a virus, once a child is infected, there is no specific medical treatment. For every 1000 children who get measles in the US, 1 to 3 of them dies. Infants are generally protected from measles for 6 months after birth due to immunity passed on from their mothers. Older kids are immunized against measles beginning at one-year-old.

Please discuss your MMR vaccination/measles concerns with your healthcare provider! According to the CDC, all reputable studies have found no link between vaccinations and autism.
