Letter From The Principal

A Valentine to Rocky Roads

In the early sixties, my parents allowed me to walk to school each day on a stretch of bumpy, rocky road. The mile-long, white gravel road meandered through a forested residential area and ended at a series of one-room houses where I attended school until third grade.

It was on that rocky road where I recited my mantra of addition facts to any robin, cardinal or blue jay that cared to listen.

It was on that rocky road that I tried to tame my fear of garter snakes as they slithered across the heated rocks in cursive letter formation.

It was on that rocky road that my dad carried me to kindergarten on his broad shoulders the day after a blizzard buried the frozen ground under a foot of snow.

It was on that rocky road that I discovered, once or twice, that I had inadvertently put my school clothes on over my pajamas.

Thanks to the Island Park Community for your help in passing the school bond and levy!  The Mercer Island Community came together on Feb. 11th with a resounding Yes! to fixing overcrowding in our schools  With 48% of islanders voting, the bond passed by 74% and the levy by 77%! This is a great testament to the value of education in our community.

We would like to thank all of you for your role in ensuring the passage of the bond and levy.  You were door-belling, and phone-banking and sign-waving, and above all, you all voted.  You posted on your Facebook page.  You reminded your neighbor at the bus pick up and at QFC to vote.  And it worked!  We went from 25% parent participation in the last bond, to well over 50%!  It goes without saying that without your support as parents, the results would not have been so successful. The benefits to our children and to our community are immeasurable.

The MISD is holding public input sessions to review the approved plans as follows:
Thursday 3/6 @ The Peak from 1 to 2:30PM
Monday 3/10 @ IMS from 7-8:30PM

From The Health Room
Keep An Eye Out For Head Lice

Head lice are tiny, wingless insects that live close to the human scalp. They feed on blood. The eggs, also called nits, are tiny, teardrop shaped eggs that attach to the hair shaft. Nits can look like dandruff but cannot be removed or brushed off. The adult louse is the size of a sesame seed and appears tan to grayish-white.

An itchy and inflamed scalp is a common symptom of lice. Head lice are not related hygiene. They are mostly spread by direct head-to-head contact.

If you think your child has head lice, it's important to talk to a healthcare provider. There are new prescription treatment options available that are safe and do not require nit combing.
