Overview of General Membership Mtg.
Island Park parents voted unanimously to endorse the February School Construction bond and Maintenance Levy at the Nov. 13th General Membership Mtg..
Speakers from the School Board and the Committee For Mercer Island Public Schools gave an overview of the $98M bond and how it will benefit children in elementary, middle, and high school. MI schools are overcrowded by approximately 750 students across all five schools, including having children in 34 portables. The construction bond includes building a 4th elementary school, adding 14 new classrooms and a gym, cafeteria, music room and other common space at the middle school, and adding 10 new classrooms, including science labs, at the high school. Mr. Hoffman also gave an overview of the benefits to Island Park of reducing overcrowding if a 4th elementary school were to open.
The most surprising statistic presented that evening was that only 25% of registered voters with school aged children voted in the last bond election. This bond requires 60% approval to pass, so parents were encouraged to be sure they are registered to vote and to turn their ballots in on time.

Island Park Elementary Introduces "It All Adds Up to Cleaner Air" Campaign
Island Park would like to reduce the harmful effects of air pollution on children by encouraging parents not to idle their cars when picking up or dropping kids off at school.
Vehicle emissions are a major cause of air pollution, which contributes to increased rates of asthma, cancer, and other heart and respiratory ailments, particularly for children.
One out of every 10 children in the state has been diagnosed with asthma and their symptoms increase as a result of increased exposure to car exhausts.
It is more efficient to turn off most vehicles than to idle for more than 30 seconds.
We ask that you become an active participant in improving air quality and reducing health risks by eliminating idling in school zones, at ATM machines, at drive-thru lanes, while waiting for a ferry or bridge, and while running in to a dry cleaner or other place of business for a "quick stop."
Please help to keep our kids healthy by turning off your car engines!

MUSIC ROOM BRAVOS
As we approach our piano and recorder winter music recitals, I want to send a sincere thank you to the many volunteers who assisted in teaching students how to play their instruments this year. The students often tell me how much they appreciate the extra attention from these dedicated parents, and I echo that sentiment! Their hours of service meant many more students were able to receive the coveted recorder belts, delve further into their piano books and gain a sense of pride and accomplishment!
Please join me in thanking: Ji Young, Stephanie Kim, Cindy Hamp, Sandra Barvaux, Oren and Zivit Nissim, Caren Halliwell, Annie Lopez, Dina Dietz, Lori Friedman, Shelley Whelan, Robin Wilt, Dr. Atley Ralston, Lauren Kim, Suzanne Feinstein, Lean Lee, Jill Hawkins, Julietta Bell, KiKi Jiang, Linda Zachariah, Lydia Chwastiak, Robin Medin, Deb Micheau, Cat Martin, Oliver Chang, and Elizabeth Beckley.
Thank you!! Sincerely, Mrs. Hamp

Children's Hospital Guide to Preventing Underage Marijuana Use
Research shows that increased access to marijuana leads to increased use by minors. With the legalization of recreational marijuana in Washington state, parents should be prepared to talk to their children about the risks and consequences of drug use. Seattle Children's Hospital has released a guide to help parents address this issue with their children:
