Principal's Letter - Dad's Briefcase
(So many beautiful memories have flooded my head since my dad's passing last week. Not surprisingly, most paint a picture of a man who, more than anything, was my first and greatest teacher. I respectfully share the following to honor him.)
When I was a child, at precisely 5:30 each evening, my dad debarked from an Omaha metro bus at the bottom of our hill where Comings Street met Mayfield Avenue. My brother, sister and I eagerly awaited his arrival from work, jockeying for the coveted position of being first in line to receive our evening hug. Being a one car family, my mom was entrusted with the salt-rusted Plymouth Rambler to run errands while dad commuted downtown via mass transit along with other businessmen decked out in suits, fedoras and attaché cases.

PTA Update
Over 50 parents and teachers attended the October PTA General Membership meeting where they heard Mr. Hoffman speak about new school initiatives and the Hand in Hand program. Mr. Hoffman gave an update on the Common Core, a new set of national K-12 learning standards adopted by the state of Washington, that all Mercer Island schools are working towards implementing. More details on the Common Core can be found at www.k12.wa.us. As part of this effort, the district is conducting a review of the elementary school language arts curriculum and a new Teacher/Principal Evaluation System is beginning this year. Mr. Hoffman also gave an overview of the Hand in Hand program, including changes made this year as we move to 5 paraprofessionals for the school. It was an engaging session filled with information about changes coming for our students and teachers this school year and lots of great questions from parents.
We hope to have more great parent and teacher participation again at our next PTA General Membership meeting on Nov. 13th at 7pm, where the focus is the February school Bond.
