An Introduction
to the Christian Faith
i

"Just to be clear, this is not the answer. This is the question."

In a series of six brand-new videos, Bishop Jim Hazelwood explores our Christian Faith, but not through the lens of the regular churchgoer. Rather, the video series is aimed at helping those who are not a part of a faith tradition understand just what it is we Christians do, specifically within the bounds of the Lutheran Church.

The "Understanding the Faith" videos are available for free on YouTube, at the links below. However, if you would like to have a DVD copy to keep and use within your own group, you can contact the New England Synod to order a copy for $15.

Ask, Thank, Tell - Now!
Inspired by the book by Charles Lane, and serving as an extension of the Crazy Stewardship Consults, Bishop Hazelwood has started a new Facebook group which will be a place to exchange ideas on how to implement a year-round stewardship emphasis, creating a culture of thanksgiving and generosity in your faith community.

The group will have updates, ideas and news with practical ideas on how to engage in meaningful, year-round stewardship, all based on "Ask, Thank, Tell," by Charles Lane - the book Bishop Hazelwood calls "the single best book on stewardship ever published."

ELCA Malaria Campaign reaches goal
The ELCA recently announced that its Malaria Campaign just reached its fundraising goal of $15 million!

"Thank you for being a part of this monumental milestone and helping us protect countless lives from this preventable, treatable disease," writes ELCA Mission Advancement Executive Director Christina Jackson-Skelton. "We couldn't have done it without you!

"Five years ago ELCA members, congregations and synods came together, dreamed big with our Lutheran companion churches and partners, and set out to raise $15 million for malaria programming. Today we celebrate all that we have accomplished together."
CEO of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services to visit New England
Sept. 25-27
Hanover, N.H.
"Loss and grief, pain and shock, anger and helplessness. These are all emotions that sweep over us as we see the pictures and hear the stories of the swelling refugee crisis in the Middle East and Europe. And none has been more heart-wrenching than the image of 3-year-old Aylan Kurdi's body washing up on a beach in Turkey, his family having tried so desperately to reach safety as they fled horrific violence in Syria. A precious life lost that could have been saved.

"The biblical concept of 'lament'- life-shattering sorrow -comes to my mind and weighs on my heart these days," says Linda Hartke, CEO of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services in Baltimore. "Each of us is called to lift our head out of sorrow and weeping and ask, "What can I do to help refugees like Aylan and his family?"

Hartke will be in Hanover, N.H., Sept. 25-27 to engage Upper Valley residents on the refugee crisis. With her decades of international human rights work and political expertise, Hartke offers a realistic and compassionate perspective on the present crisis as well as an overview of ongoing work with refugees in the U.S. In January, she visited the largest Syrian refugee camp in Jordan and recently worked with the State Department to increase the number from 5000 to 10,000 Syrian refugees to be admitted to the U.S. for resettlement this coming year. LIRS is sponsoring a petition to increase that number to 60,000.

Hartke's visit includes stops at Dartmouth College and Our Savior Lutheran Church in Hanover. For more information including a full schedule, click here to download the press release.
