Episcopal Service Corps site seeking volunteers
The Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island is seeking volunteers for the Jonathan Daniels House, an Episcopal Service Corps site sponsored by the Diocese that is also open to Lutherans. JDH Fellows are in their mid-20s and 30s and are committed to spending a year:
- Serving others in solidarity and promoting justice;
- Deepening their spiritual awareness and discerning God's call in their lives;
- Living simply in intentional Christian community
They will volunteer for 35 hours a week in local social service and advocacy organizations. They will also spend 8-10 hours a week in leadership training and spiritual formation. They will live with simplicity in a shared residence in or near south Providence, following a Rule of Life which will include regular prayer and worship. Fellows receive a very basic stipend from JDH to cover food, transportation and personal expenses, and JDH also provides insurance and housing and leadership training. Fees from the internship site placements cover some but not all of the program's costs.
The Jonathan Daniels House will move this year to a former church rectory belonging to St Mary's Episcopal Church in East Providence.
The House is named after Jonathan Myrick Daniels, an Episcopal seminarian who was murdered while working for civil rights in Alabama in 1965 and who had ministered in south Providence before journeying to Alabama.

Three Guys and a Motorcycle Ride
After last year's wildly successful World Hunger Ride, Bishop James Hazelwood is enlisting the help of Steve Dumas and Bishop Rick Hoyme of the Northwest Wisconsin Synod for another trip. This time, they're riding to the ELCA Youth Gathering in Detroit. Want to join in?
The global water crisis doesn't always make headlines. But the truth is that it claims more lives each year than war. Globally, 1.8 billion people - that's about one out of every four people in our world - drink from contaminated water sources. Unsafe water leads to illnesses that claim the lives of 840,000 people each year, almost half of whom are children under the age of 5.
Your gift helps local communities provide water for drinking and cooking, growing crops, and improving sanitation and hygiene, as well as providing for ongoing health education, training and maintenance for long-term sustainable access to water in the community.
Jim, Steve and Rick will start their engines soon, so get on your bikes and ride!

St. Paul (Arlington, Mass.) working to help South Sudan
St. Paul Lutheran Church (Arlington, Mass.) formed a bond with 40 Sudanese refugees 14 years ago when they came to the Greater Boston congregation. Since then, the church has been heavily involved with several development projects to help people in South Sudan with the difficult but necessary tasks of generating food and clean water, as well as schools and medical clinics.
The congregation's Social Ministry Committee recently made a $1,000 contribution to ameliorate the food shortage in South Sudan, but more help is needed. So the church is turning to the region for help raising funds.
Donations may be sent to:
Village Help for South Sudan, Inc. 34 Madison Ave. #1 Cambridge, MA 02140
For more information, you can also visit the program's website,villagehelpforsouthsudan.org.
