The Super Synod Challenge for ELCA World Hunger, which has pitted our synod against the Northwest Washington Synod in a race to see who can raise the most money for ELCA World Hunger during the lead-up to the Super Bowl, is entering its final hours. As of noon on Super Bowl Sunday, Northwest Washington holds a $3,216 lead on us, but the game isn't over yet! There's still time for us New Englanders to pull off a Tom Brady-inspired, fourth-quarter comeback, but we NEED YOUR HELP!
All donations go straight to ELCA World Hunger, which works with partner congregations and churches throughout the world to provide aid and food to the places that need it most.
By the numbers:
According to Reuters, the Super Bowl is the second-biggest day for food consumption in America, behind only Thanksgiving Day. Its impact on the economy is estimated at $14.3 billion. That averages out to about $78 spent by each American consumer. Yet according to The World Bank Poverty Overview, 1.2 billion people worldwide live in extreme poverty, surviving on less than $1.25 per day.
$78 vs. $1.25. It's staggering.
Last year, 111.5 million people watched the Super Bowl. That's a lot of people. Now, multiply that number by 8. In 2011, 868 million people worldwide were considered "chronically hungry," and could not lead active daily lives.
So what do you say, can you lend a hand and help us show those Pacific Northwesterners how generous we can be? Click on the big red button above or below to head to our website, then click the PayPal link below our helmet to make your donation!
Also, if you're hosting a Super Bowl party, please invite your guests to join in - we will accept checks during the week, but would love to hear your pledge! Email Andy Merritt at amerritt@nesynod.org to make that pledge.
