Periodically, when visiting congregations I am asked, usually by a child, "what does a bishop do?" In an attempt to answer that question, I have decided to put together a series called, "A day in the life of a bishop." I know, I can tell you are already captivated by the title. Since there is no typical day for me, I'll assemble a series over the course of time, and this will help give people a glimpse of my work.
Obviously, I cannot include everything. For instance, on this day I spent about an hour and a half in conversation with one of our rostered leaders about both personal matters and congregational issues. That is not included. Then there is an extensive telephone call which I did not record, though you'll get a hint about it in the video. Happy viewing.

A pilgrimage to the Holy Land
Twenty-two people from congregations across the New England Synod will be traveling to Jerusalem next week, as a part of a companion synod visit with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL). Pastor Tim Keyl (Bethesda - New Haven, Conn.) will be leading the group which includes Bishop Jim Hazelwood and Pastor Lisa Stoen Hazelwood, along with her healthy and near 90-year-old father Ted Stoen. The two week trip departing Nov. 12 and returning Nov. 26 will include visits to Biblical sites in Jerusalem, the Sea of Galilee and Bethlehem.
In addition, the delegation will also spend time at the Lutheran World Federation guest house in Jerusalem, share meals with Palestinian Christians in Ramallah and meet with Bishop Younan of the ELCJHL. Bishop Hazelwood plans to blog about the trip on his Facebook page and his Bishop on a Bike blog, if you'd like to follow along.

Farewell Cathy, hello Marianne!
On Oct. 31, the synod bid farewell to our secretary and receptionist, Cathy Schlichte (left), who retired after five years with the synod to spend more time with her husband, John, and her children and grandchildren. John and Cathy live in West Boylston, Mass., and love to travel - especially to places where they can jump on a river and do some whitewater rafting!
Cathy is succeeded by our new secretary and receptionist, Marianne Uva (right). Marianne can be reached at the same email address formerly used to reach Cathy: receptionist@nesynod.org, or by calling (508) 791-1530 x100.
Please join us in wishing Cathy a healthy, happy and fun retirement, and warmly welcoming Marianne to the Synod family!
