What does Confirmation mean to you?
Confirmation
Confirmation
Pastor Dan Hille (St. Matthew, Avon, Conn.) interviewed St. Matthew's confirmands, and shared a video of their answers. It's an intriguing and sometimes humorous look at how the church's young members are processing the many lessons involved in their confirmation. Check it out!

St. Andrew (Charlestown, R.I.) puts teens to work

This summer, St. Andrew Lutheran Church will again host the Ocean State Work Camp, bringing 200 teenagers from across the country and Canada to tend to the Rhode Island residences of 35 homeowners who are financially or physically challenged, who are trying to stay in their homes throughout South County.

The work includes painting, repair and construction of wheelchair ramps, decks and stairs, and the installation of skirting on trailer homes. The work is free to the homeowners. Fundraising by St. Andrew paid for all of the construction projects, with a significant portion donated by Thrivent Financial.

The Ocean State Work Camp has its roots in St. Andrew's ongoing Faith in Action program and in Neighbors Helping Neighbors-RI, a 501(c)3 nonprofit.

Mickey Cochrane, a resident of Kodiak, Alaska, said she had a family friend, a man in his early 70's, living in Wickford, R.I. Winston Stadig lives alone, she said, and is blind. Cochrane said he was financially challenged and  had some things that he needed done around the house and wondered if he could be a candidate for help through the Work Camp.

Chris Anderson, Secretary for the Ocean State Work Camp, forwarded the message to Richard Brakenwagen, President of St. Andrew's Church Council and coordinator of the Ocean State Work Camp.

"Once I visited with Winston in his home to survey his needs, I concluded that there was no way we could not reach out to this man," Brakenwagen said. "We found that his needs were far beyond the capability of the Work Camp; however we felt we could normalize his life through our 'Faith in Action' program.

"Mickey was very helpful in providing some background into Winston's needs, which we confirmed with a visit from some of our Faith In Action Team members.  In all, seven of our Faith In Action team members accomplished some plumbing work and the refinishing of a wall and the painting of a room.

"We have plans to circle back with him from time to time, to ensure his safety and to see if he has any needs that we can attend to."

Saturday, Aug. 3, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Immanuel Lutheran Church

647 North Main St., Attleboro, Mass.

One of our military community partners has advised us to create a day of grace and care for deployed soldiers and their families, or veterans and their families who are recovering from the effects of military life. Our care for all people comes before our questions about the politics of war.

We welcome participants, as well as volunteers to help as: art assistants, yoga teachers, chair massage therapists, Reiki practitioners, and spiritual directors as well as assistants for set up, clean up, and food prep. With offers to help, or questions, please contact the office at office@immanuellc.org.
