Bishop Hazelwood featured in Boston Globe
 New England Synod Bishop James Hazelwood was profiled in the Monday, June 17, edition of The Boston Globe. Reporter Jeremy C. Fox caught up with Bishop Hazelwood during his stop at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Laconia, N.H., which came during Laconia's famous Motorcycle Week.
"James E. Hazelwood is a man with black leather boots planted in two different worlds," Fox writes. "Hazelwood, 54, wears a white clerical collar to work as bishop of the New England Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, but in his free time he dons a leather jacket, settles his 6-foot-7-inch frame onto a motorcycle, and just rides."

Nones, numbers and new beginnings
Synod Assembly at a glance
The 2013 Synod Assembly has come and gone. For three days in Springfield, Mass., Lutherans from all over the region gathered to vote, congregate and hear about the present and future church.
Assembly included the ordination of Tiffany Chaney (above, with Rev. Nathan Pipho), who has spent the last year as the mission developer at The Intersection (Dorchester, Mass.), as well as the official reception of Faith Lutheran Church in Middletown, Conn., as the newest member congregation of the New England Synod. And one of the highlights of the assembly came Friday night, when Bishop James Hazelwood met with "nones" - six people who do not identify as specifically religious - for a relaxed but well-attended chat about how spirituality shapes their lives outside of a traditional church setting.

Bishop Hazelwood has secured a discounted rate, for this year only, for the Willow Creek leadership event August 8-9, 2013. Willow Creek is a continuing education event in the area of leadership development. This year's speakers include Colin Powell, Leadership thinkers Patrick Lencioni, Liz Wiseman and Brene Brown.

A Military & Family Wellness Day

One of our military community partners has advised us to create a day of grace and care for deployed soldiers and their families, or veterans and their families who are recovering from the effects of military life. Our care for all people comes before our questions about the politics of war.
We welcome participants, as well as volunteers to help as: art assistants, yoga teachers, chair massage therapists, Reiki practitioners, and spiritual directors as well as assistants for set up, clean up, and food prep. Scholarships awarded by St. Andrew (Bristol, Conn.)
 The Christian Education Committee of St. Andrew Lutheran Church has selected two students who will be entering college this fall to receive the annual awards offered to its members.
Erika Matulis, daughter of Gidget and George Matulis Jr., of Unionville, Conn., will be graduating from Farmington High School and plans to attend Paier College of Art, Hamden, Conn.
Thomas Golden, soon to be a graduate of Bristol Eastern High School, will attend Quinnipiac University. He is the son of William and Kathy Golden of Bristol.

Music and Worship Coordinator, Holy Trinity (Newington, N.H.)
Coordinate the worship and music ministries of Holy Trinity Lutheran congregation. Collaborate with music staff and volunteers in creating a vibrant environment for worshipful expression and musical growth. Recruit, train and mentor: musicians, liturgical deacons and artists into participation. Direct the chancel choir, the bell choir, and youth music. Provide musical leadership for the 11:00 am worship service, joint services, concerts, special services, funerals and weddings. Participate in and support the 8:30 am worship service. Create an annual plan for the music and worship life of the congregation in conjunction with the Pastor and Worship and Music Team. Manage the music library and equipment of the congregation (including consultation with visiting musicians and establishing relationship with the piano tuner and organ tuner). Maintain records and submit reports for copyright usages and licenses. Explore ways of community involvement and outreach through the music and worship ministry. The secretary of Our Savior's provides administrative support to the pastor and congregational leaders, and is responsible for publications, communication within the congregation, data entry, website maintenance, financial reporting, accounts payable and receivable, and maintaining office supplies. The secretary works 20 hours/per week; specific hours are flexible. St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, a congregation of over 300 members with a rich musical heritage and strong liturgical tradition is seeking an organist. A new sanctuary with a newly installed Holtkamp pipe organ will be completed this summer. Responsibilities include one Sunday morning worship service, additional special services, and choir accompaniment. Salary $13,000-$15,000 with four weeks paid vacation. Director of Christian Ed., Faith (Cambridge, Mass.)
Faith Lutheran Church is seeking a director of Christian education. It is a part-time, permanent position that is now open.
Primary duties
Nursery: Continue the nursery school program for children ages 1 to 4; be the supervising teacher; manage and support nursery attendants from the congregation.
Sunday School: Manage the Sunday School program for children ages 5 to 12; teach these children as necessary; recruit and support teachers from the congregation.
Adult education: Manage the education program for adults. Recruit teachers from the congregation and staff. Expand the opportunities for education in the congregation.
Abilities
Experienced church teacher. Experienced with children of all ages. Good knowledge of Christian and Lutheran basic principles and teachings. Able to work with both adults and children.
Compensation and hours
The salaried position pays $500 per month for an expected seven hours a week, half devoted to Sunday activities and half for planning and preparation. Included are three weeks paid vacation.
Faith is a vital Lutheran congregation in the middle of Cambridge. A majority of its members are in their twenties and thirties. Most of the children are under the age of eight. About 50 people worship Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to approximately 11:30 a.m. Coffee hour and Bible study or other study follow. Sunday School for children starts at 9:45 and goes until 10:30, when children join the rest of the congregation in worship.

The ability and willingness to work collaboratively with others and to foster effective team building are important means by which to fully utilize the talents of others in the pursuit of excellence in this mission. The ability to be progressive regarding the future of the school will be significant to its long-term success.

Choir Director - Immanuel (Amherst, Mass.)
Immanuel (Amherst, Mass.) is seeking a part-time choir director. Position available beginning Aug. 15, 2013. The adult choir numbers about 16-20 and sings for Sunday morning services September through mid-June and some special services. Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings.
The choir director directs the adult choir, participates on the Worship Committee, plans the service in cooperation with the pastor and organist, suggests music appropriate for the Sunday or occasion, recruits choir members and other musicians, maintains the music library, and supports other musical activities of the congregation. The adult choir serves the congregation; it typically sings two anthems a week and provides special music for Christmas, Holy Week and Easter, in addition to preparing larger works. There may be opportunities for developing a children's choir or other groups.
Immanuel has a strong tradition of incorporating the music and arts in worship. The organist is highly accomplished with a PhD in musicology; local musicians often contribute their talents.
