Nones, numbers and new beginnings
Synod Assembly at a glance
The 2013 Synod Assembly has come and gone. For three days in Springfield, Mass., Lutherans from all over the region gathered to vote, congregate and hear about the present and future church.
Assembly included the ordination of Tiffany Chaney, who has spent the last year as the mission developer at The Intersection (Dorchester, Mass.), as well as the official reception of Faith Lutheran Church in Middletown, Conn., as the newest member congregation of the New England Synod. And one of the highlights of the assembly came Friday night, when Bishop James Hazelwood met with "nones" - six people who do not identify as specifically religious - for a relaxed but well-attended chat about how spirituality shapes their lives outside of a traditional church setting.
There's plenty of coverage coming in the next few days to NESynod.org, but in the meantime, you can check out our Facebook photo gallery from Assembly here. Also, the Rev. Laura Everett, Executive Director at the Massachusetts Council of Churches, has a great recap of the bishop's discussion with the "nones" here.
Assembly DVD: The Synod will provide a DVD for purchase that includes Bishop Hazelwood's report and Sunday sermon, as well as the discussion with the "nones." DVDs will cost $12. For more information, contact Communications Director Andy Merritt at amerritt@nesynod.org or 508-333-1761.

Hartford Courant highlights Faith (Middletown)
MIDDLETOWN - Faith Lutheran Church has long been an advocate of hunger prevention, and on Monday night Louise Mansueto, a member of the church council, was able to ensure that 30 cyclists did not go hungry after a long day of riding. Faith Lutheran has been hosting participants of the national Bike & Build program since 2007. Mansueto and her team of volunteers worked all day to provide baked ziti, salad, drinks and snacks to the group of young adults. Bike & Build, founded in 2002 by Mark Bush, conducts cross-country bike rides that include full days of volunteer work on affordable housing projects along the route. The cyclists who stopped in Middletown began their trip on June 6 in Providence and should reach Half Moon Bay, Calif., on Aug. 20. About once a week, the group will take a break from cycling and spend the day at a worksite - painting, siding, roofing, fencing or tackling whatever else needs to get done.
