Bethesda, New Haven, Conn.
June 2, 2013 - 4 p.m.
The Bethesda Music Series invites the Greater New Haven
community to a performance of Mozart's sublime "Requiem" (completed by R. Levin) and other choral and instrumental music. The hour-long program will take place at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 450 Whitney Avenue, New Haven.
The Bethesda Choir will be joined by the choir of First Presbyterian Church, New Haven, as well as by soloists and orchestra, under the direction of Lars Gjerde and Patrick McCreless. We promise an afternoon of inspiring and beautiful music making! Mozart died before completing his Requiem. Mozart scholar and performer Robert Levin recently made a rarely heard completion of the work. Join us for a special treat! The event is free and open to the public. A free-will offering will be collected to support the next season of the Bethesda Music Series, recently featured in a national church magazine for its efforts to raise funds for New Haven charities through five annual concerts (see "Singing for a Cause" in The Lutheran Magazine, December 2012). A reception will follow the concert.

Pastors go from praying to pounding the pavement
Each Tuesday, pastors in the Greater Hartford Conference meet for pericope - a chance to connect through shared study of the Bible, a chance to talk about concerns and joys, a chance to find communion among their fellow clergy.
And then, they run.

St. Andrew (Bristol, Conn.) becomes the Serengeti
On May 4, the St. Andrew Outreach and Mission Committee held a Safari Supper in its Fellowship Hall. It was a fun night for a serious cause: raising funds for the ELCA's Malaria Campaign.
Supper consisted of traditional foods from Africa, Mexico, India and South America - areas of the world where malaria sill poses a threat, although a decreasing one thanks to the efforts of national Lutheran churches.
Members of the Outreach and Mission Committee and several parishioners volunteered to prepare the food with such strange names as Zesty Quinoa Salad, Chicken Moambe, Chutney Chicken, Spicy Yam Soup and many more.
A goal of the committee was to educate our congregation about malaria. Among our congregants are two very qualified "teachers" to do this, a registered nurse, Kathy Cutter, and Dr. Trini Matthew, an epidemiologist. The ELCA provided excellent resources as well.
Our emphasis on malaria will continue through the month of May. Fellowship Hall has a display of mosquito netting with clip-art mosquitoes attached to it. Also, there is a mosquito tent suspended from the ceiling; above the tent is a huge black mosquito-but it cannot penetrate the net. The children sleeping within the tent will be spared malaria.
Although the figures aren't totally determined, it appears that we will exceed $500 plus a matching portion from Thrivent for the Malaria Campaign.

This year, the scholarship is offered to a keyboard player for one year of organ lessons at the studio. Auditions will be held in June at the studio for anyone interested in applying for the scholarship. Please contact Linda Hilliard at lbh2892@gmail.com
