LECTURE AT OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY

Clare Olsen and Sinead MacNamara will be at OSU TODAY, Monday, April 18, at 5:00 pm in the Jack and Carol Corgan Auditorium.

Clare and Sinead are faculty at  Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Syracuse University respectively, and they have recently authored a book entitled 'Collaborations in Architecture and Engineering,' which includes in-depth case studies of cross-disciplinary collaborations and an overview of the tools and methods for successful partnerships in both the academic and professional realms. This focus on collaboration will be the subject of their lecture.

Clare J. Olsen, of California Polytechnic State University,  San Luis Obispo,  holds a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies from Brown University and a Masters of Architecture with distinction from the University of California, Los Angeles. She has taught at Tulane University, Cornell University and Syracuse University. Clare also runs her own practice, C.O.CO., where she investigates systems thinking on an installation scale.

Sinéad Mac Namara, of Syracuse University, teaches structural engineering courses for the School of Architecture, mechanics courses for the College of Engineering, and electives for both schools. Her research focuses on: innovation and creativity in structural engineering education; structural art; and the structural performance of shell structures. Prior to joining the Syracuse Faculty in 2006, Mac Namara's Ph.D. thesis at Princeton examined the shell behavior of domed roofs in nuclear containment structures. While there she served as an Assistant in Instruction for Prof. David Billington in a series of noted innovative courses that focused on the role of engineering in society and the urban and regional environment. In 2005, she won the Princeton E-Council Award for Teaching Excellence, in 2011, she won Best Presentation at the Architectural Engineering Division of the American Society for Engineering Education at the Annual Conference and Exposition, and in March 2011 she received the Meredith Teaching Recognition award at SU.

NEWS OF INTEREST TO OUR MEMBERS

The Case for CLT: Opportunities and Challenges hosted by WoodWorks

Cross laminated timber (CLT) is an engineered wood building system designed to complement light- and heavy-timber framing options. Now available to North American building designers, it offers the structural simplicity needed for cost-effective projects, as well as benefits such as fast installation, reduced waste, improved thermal performance and design versatility. This presentation will introduce CLT through a series of project examples while considering some of the more challenging aspects of CLT building design-such as fire and life safety, lateral and seismic design, acoustic performance and building envelope. Topics will also include the manufacturing and specification of CLT, building code considerations and available resources such as the US CLT Handbook.  Attendees will qualify for 2 AIA/CES LUs (HSW) or PDH credits.

THURSDAY, MAY 26

$20 cost - Lunch is included

Location:
Mickey Mantle's Steakhouse
