Issue No. 48
August, 2015

R. C. Stevens believes in educating young individuals in the vast career opportunities the construction industry has to offer. With so many career options for the up-coming work force to choose from, it is important to introduce them to the construction industry through programs such as internships. Fostering the future development of tradesmen in areas such as masonry, carpentry, being a foreman or superintendent insures that there is a skilled workforce for the future. When we work as a team to mentor our interns, we impart solid work skills and practices that they can benefit from as their career progresses.

Thanks to all of the RCS team for sharing your time and talent with our recent summer intern, Tyler  Wenzel. We wish Tyler the best in his upcoming school year.

Sincerely,
Tim
Spotlight
Tyler Wenzel
Tyler Wenzel - Summer Intern
Tyler has interned with RCS for the past two summers while attending Tallahassee Community College. Here is what he had to say about his experience;

"I have worked on many interesting projects while at R.C.Stevens. One that is memorable was the Wayne Farms chicken plant in Jack, AL. It was my first out-of-state trip for work and it had many new experiences working in that environment. I feel that I have gotten a lot of experience in the field that I hope to work in some day. This practical experience will help me make decisions regarding my future as opposed to some of my peers who work typical summer jobs for college students and acquire no actual experience in the field they are going into."

Garrison and Chet recall fun memories of working with Tyler during his internship. Garrison recalls how Tyler acquired the nickname, "Dragon Boy" by the Coca-Cola Refreshments (CCR) Tampa plant staff. "Tyler was the safety representative between the CCR Tampa plant Safety Representative and the RCS team. The CCR Tampa plant staff affectionately called him "Dragon Boy" because of his ability to manage the difficult position."

Chet remembers, "last summer I used him as a snow shoveler and remover for the Wayne Farms freezer project in Alabama."

This fall, Tyler starts at the University of West Florida to pursue a degree in building construction. His goal is to enter the construction industry as a project manager and in the future own his own general contracting business. He plans to return as an intern at RCS next summer.

Thank you, Tyler, for all your hard work and dedication!
New Members on the Team
R.C. Stevens welcomes three new members to the team, Courtney Payne, John Bogart and David Peterson.

John Bogart, Foreman
John Bogart is our new foreman that will be working at various sites. He recently moved from Springfield, IL to Deltona, FL with his wife, Rachel. John has 28 years of experience as a contractor for civil and residential projects.
David Peterson,

David Peterson brings 30 years of experience in construction to the team. He will be a superintendent on many of our healthcare projects in the area. David moved to Florida in 2001 with his wife Lisa and son, Ryan, who starts college this fall at the University of Florida to pursue his law degree. He currently lives in Longwood, FL with his family and is an avid Golfer.
Darrell Palama - Cornhole State Champion!
Darrell and Glenn at the Florida State Cornhole Championship

Darrell was on fire this cornhole season reaching 13th in the country and qualifying for the World Championship. In June, Darrell placed 4th at the Florida State Cornhole Championships in West Palm Beach, FL. Glenn attended the match to watch Darrell work his magic and cheer him on. Darrell ended the 2014/2015 season ranked 19th in the country and finished 25th in the World Championship in Knoxville, Tennessee; where over 400 qualifying participants were vying for the title. The playing season ramps back up in September.

Congratulations Darrell!

Drink Water Before You Get Thirsty
The heat index has been well over 100 degrees this summer and that means there is a high risk for heat-related illness. One measure you can take to reduce the risk is to drink water and stay hydrated while on the jobsite.

OSHA's Heat Illness Prevention Campaign recommends that workers "drink small amounts of water before they become thirsty. They should drink about 4 cups of water every hour. Also, keep cool fresh water available in a safety and side approved location that is close to the work area." Having water at close proximity ensures hydration is readily available and convenient to access.
