"Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it."
William Arthur Ward
Thanksgiving is a reminder of what I should be doing all year long, but overlook so often.
~For those of you who have taken a few minutes to read our newsletter;
~For those of you who have passed it along to someone else;
~For those of you who have entered our contests, and especially
~For those of you who told us that you read our newsletter (even if you didn't)...Thank you!
Your words are an encouragement that lasts far longer than you would ever imagine, and we cherish each of you. Have a Thanksgiving with blessings spilling over and gratitude beyond measure.

Tip of the Month: Fun with Tax Planning |
 This is the time of year when we nerdy types sharpen our pencils and meet with clients so they won't be surprised next April 15. (OK, we don't literally sharpen anything; we type, but that doesn't sound quite as clever.)
As of this writing we are looking down the throat of some big tax increases. If the election changes our recommendations, we'll let you know. In the meantime, this year may look a tax bargain when you look at what's in store for 2013.

Recommended Resources - Best-Kept Secrets
|
Don't you love it when you find a new spot that isn't yet "mainstream"? I want others to share in the fun. I want to find out about the cute little shops you can't find in Nashville or Lexington. I want us to move up a pants size together when I find a great cupcake store. Sharing is a wonderful thing! If you're stuck in a rut, our new series, Best-Kept Secrets ("BKS"), is the cure. A BKS can be anything different and special, be it a bike shop that gives great service or the perfect photography studio.
This month's BKS is BBQ (or Barbecue for you Nawtheners). We begin with Pilot Oak Grocery, a.k.a. Southern Red's BBQ, a unique country restaurant with the best food for miles around. When we began eating there a few years ago, it was just a grocery with a few picnic tables that looked as if they were left there by accident. Micah ("Red") is 24 and left behind a successful business in WV before moving back to Pilot Oak. (In case you have a need, he runs a beaver-trapping business in his spare time). My favorite is Red's huge, perfectly-cooked rib-eyes that are juicy and taste of hickory. Red's is on the border of KY and TN and you can still call 270-376-2678 to order a BBQ Thanksgiving turkey - your family will thank you for it.
Brad suggested historic Harned's BBQ in Reidland, and a good idea it is. Harned's is a family-run business where carhops bring a smoked pork sammy and homemade milkshake out to your car the same way they did in the 1950's. The BBQ is tender and tasty and you can get a big serving of fries or other sides to go along with it. (mmmmmm....hunger pangs.) What's YOUR BKS? Email your BKS to us and, if we feature it here, you'll win a $10 WalMart gift card along with recognition in our newsletter. Fame and fortune, can't beat that!

(Almost) Famous Recipes of the Month: A Better Bean Casserole |
Green Bean Casserole for Thanksgiving is so predictable. Maybe I disdain it because it was not a staple at our holiday table when I was young or maybe I'm still haunted from the rows of green bean casseroles that lined the tables at our church potlucks. I don't know. But really. Stir green beans and cream of mushroom soup together, top with canned onion rings and pop the glop into the oven. That's not a recipe, even if you (shudder) add Velveeta to it.
So it is with trepidation that I post my recipe containing green beans but befriended by peas and limas. And it's really not my own. It's Granny's and a necessity at our grown-up Thanksgiving table. So we're giving our dear readers a break on cranberry recipes this year (which are still online if you, like me, adore them). And I, too, use canned onion rings, but some things we must accept and that's all I will say about it.
So let's just say NO. We will NOT be the Stepford Wives of Green Bean Casserole one more year. Break away from the pack, hold your head high, and serve Better Bean Casserole. read more... Top of page |
On October 7, 125 advisors from across America attended the sold-out Nick Murray conference in Manhattan. I was there and the best description I can come up with is a financial planner rock concert. I am more confident than ever about our philosophy of investing the funds with which our clients have entrusted us. Behavior is the great determinant of whether you will have enough money to last through retirement and Nick really reinforced that theory. Are you on track for the retirement you want - or are you spending down your retirement while you're still working? Nick's wife, Joan, hosted a coffee for the spouses advisors while we were in session, giving the Bobfather some fun time in a room surrounded by beautiful, rich women. He is already looking forward to next year's conference.

OK, you know the drill: it's CONTEST TIME! You'll find the answer to the question in the video. This month's contest question is: "What is the correct description of the object I hold up in the beginning of the video?" Be the first person to email us or post the correct answer on FACEBOOK and win a fabulous, shiny new Wal-Mart gift certificate!!!
Thanksgiving hugs!
