Donate for a Discount: Let's Keep Our City #BostonWarm!

As some of you read on our blog today, all of us at UG were moved to action after learning of the huge obstacles facing our city's homeless this winter. All of this began yesterday morning, when WBUR broadcast a report on the reopening of the Boston Night Center, a warming station for the homeless. The center was forced to reopen due to a 30% swell in homeless - in this winter of all winters - that occurred when the Long Island shelter and substance abuse treatment center closed in October.

From this report, we learned about #BostonWarm, a group that is trying to gather the most basic of items to be distributed through the Old South Church and Emmanuel Church homeless support programs. #BostonWarm has an Amazon wish list, but for those that do not want to purchase items to be shipped, they also have a plea for donations.

We have all felt first-hand the frustrations of this winter. And yet, we have warm homes to go home to, bottles of wine to open, food to eat. We have gloves, hats and scarves to keep us warm. Boston's homeless have none of these things.

So here's how we're helping, and we're sending this to you tonight asking for you to help too. From Thursday to Sunday of this week, we will be collecting donations for #BostonWarm at both of our locations. If you donate, no matter how small or large the donation, you will receive a 10% discount on bottles of beer, spirits or wine, or a 20% discount on cases of wine. The discount applies to in-stock inventory, and you don't need to shop to donate. It's just our way of thanking you for helping us to gather items. On Monday, we will load up the UG Mobile and drop the donations at Old South Church.

Here's what you can donate:

- Non-perishable food (cans must have a pop-top)

- Warm hats, scarves, gloves and socks (these are the only items #BostonWarm is accepting at this time)

- $43 checks made out to City Mission Society, with Boston Warm in the memo line. This money is used to rent storage lockers where the homeless may safely leave their belongings.

Amazingly, and because you are all amazing, we've already started to receive donations.

Thank you for helping us to keep #BostonWarm.
