February - the Busiest Month of the Year?

  february

Remember when January and February were the two months every year when all of Boston hibernated? No more. Between Superbowl, Valentine's Day, the Boston Wine Expo, and the Boston Wine Festival, we have almost non-stop events and wine-maker visits at UG. We're also continuing our 15% off sale on all 2011 rosés, and launching a new cocktail sampler and beer newsletter, Urban Hops (to sign up, email Ben)!

We spent January coming up with our 2013 goals, and thanks to an inspiring article in Inc Magazine by Danny Meyer, we articulated them via a recent blog post. 2013 is the year of solidifying UG's commitment to hospitality and concierge-style service. Please let us know how we can help you in all your beverage needs in the coming months!

Spotlight Wine: 2008 Petrolo "Torrione" (Tuscany, IT)

torrione

Wine websites say a lot about the attitude of the producer. The homepage of the Petrolo website boasts a quote from the Beatles AND a video of Jimi Hendricks. So it should be no surprise that they produce wines that live just outside the mainstream of Tuscan expectations.

Their wines are, of course, deeply Tuscan in flavor and profile, but the expression of them in the hands of these winemakers becomes something more - Parker likes to call them "sensual" and "intellectually curious."

The "Torrione" (which means "Tower" and is named for a medieval tower that still stands on the Roman foundation on their property) is a mix of Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a bouquet of red cherries, plums, leather and tobacco, as all good Super Tuscans should. It's a fleshy and round-style wine, fruit-forward on the palate thanks to the addition of extra Merlot to this vintage - a little bit of Jimi Hendricks, if you will. Perfect for drinking now and over the years to come. The value of this Super-Tuscan, given it's fantastic quality, will knock your socks off!
