SEPTEMBER 2015 - Albany Records releases "Multitude, Solitude: Eric Nathan" a stunning debut recording of selected chamber and solo works by composer, Eric Nathan. The CD features seven compositions-all premiere recordings-that come together to paint an intense and real portrait of the composer, and serves as a poignant roadmap through his musical personality. The stellar instrumentalists highlighted on the recording are: the Momenta Quartet, New York Philharmonic Principal Trombonist Joseph Alessi, oboist Peggy Pearson, former Juilliard String Quartet violist Samuel Rhodes, pianist Mei Rui and trumpeter Hugo Moreno. The recording was produced by Judith Sherman and is being distributed by NAXOS.

The CD features four chamber works for strings along side three works for solo instruments. Central to each piece are the opposing themes of multitude and solitude, division and unity, dialogue and soliloquy-themes that have underpinned much of Mr. Nathan's recent music. They reflect the lyrical and expressive side of his music, which focuses on conveying a range of intense emotions, as well as his playful and experimental sides, where he seeks to re-imagine the technical and sonic possibilities of instruments and test the boundaries of what is technically possible.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER

Composer Eric Nathan, a 2013 Rome Prize Fellow and 2014 Guggenheim Fellow, has garnered acclaim internationally through performances at the New York Philharmonic's 2014 Biennial, Carnegie Hall, Tanglewood, Aspen Music Festival, Aldeburgh Music Festival, and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, to name but a few. He was composer-in-residence at the 2013 Chelsea Music Festival and Chamber Music Campania. A graduate of Yale and Indiana University, he received his doctorate at Cornell. He is assistant professor of music at Brown University. Nathan's music conveys a compelling and infectious energy--virtuosity in the service of defining musical drama and character. In the seven works in this collection--three solo and four small-ensemble pieces--there's often a thrilling hint of vicarious danger. Performed by some of the most noted performers of contemporary music, including the Momenta Quartet, this recording serves as a fitting introduction to this brilliant young composer's music.
