Celebrating 20 Years this Season

Pacifica Quartet CD Cover NEW WORK FOR PACIFICA Shulamit Ran

On the heels of the Toronto and Tokyo premieres this past spring, the Pacifica kicks off its twentieth anniversary season by performing a new quartet by Shulamit Ran, a longtime collaborator and colleague from their residency at the University of Chicago. Titled Glitter, Doom, Shards, Memory, the piece and the inspiration behind it are the focus of the Pacifica's latest blog entry. Read about it and check out the international lineup of performances in New York City, Madrid, London and Aalan. The commission is funded by Music Accord, a consortium of presenters from the US as well as Suntory Hall in Tokyo and Wigmore Hall in London. Kyle Macmillan recently spoke to Masumi about the new work and the Quartet's activities, and the article ran in the Chicago Sun-Times.

ON TOUR THIS FALL

The Pacifica Quartet's Fall 2014 concert schedule will bring the musicians to audiences in New York City, Nov. 7; Oklahoma City, Nov. 9; and Pittsburgh, Nov. 10, among other engagements. They return to Europe in November for a much anticipated tour that takes them to concert halls in Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Ettelbruck, and Liverpool. ON THE RECORDING FRONT New Shostakovich Box Set

The Pacifica's monumental survey of Dmitri Shostakovich's complete string quartets, The Soviet Experience, has just been released by Cedille Records as a box set featuring all four volumes. The Soviet Experience has been lauded for its exceptional performances and as unique among Shostakovich quartet cycles for including quartets by some the composer's most significant Soviet-era contemporaries: Nikolai Miaskovsky, Sergei Prokofiev, Mieczyslaw Weinberg, and Alfred Schnittke. Download the box set or order the individual discs here.

Anthony McGill, Marc-Andr Hamelin & Menahem Pressler

The Pacifica Quartet has been much in the public eye recently through its concert and recording collaboration with the brilliant clarinetist Anthony McGill, culminating in Cedille's recent Mozart & Brahms Clarinet Quintets. Watch a video of the Quartet and Anthony McGill discussing their recording project here. Next up, the Fontana Chamber Arts will present the Pacifica and Anthony on October 24, and the Arizona Friends of Chamber Music in Tucson will present the artists in concert on December 10.

Longtime mentor and distinguished chamber musician Menahem Pressler joins the Pacifica in the recording studio next month. The artists are co-faculty at the University of Indiana's Jacobs School of Music and have played together at concert halls around the world for over a decade. Their recording of the Brahms Quintet is due to be released on the Cedille label in 2015.

The ensemble has also collaborated recently with the outstanding pianist Marc-Andr Hamelin who is long known for his matchless exploration of unfamiliar pianistic terrain. On tour both in the United States and abroad, they have performed Leo Ornstein's rarely heard Piano Quintet, and Hyperion plans to release their recording of the work in 2015.
