Students head to national technology competition

SARASOTA - After a strong showing at the Florida Technology Student Association competition in March, teams from Brookside and Sarasota Middle School will head to the National TSA competition set for June 28-July 2, in Orlando.       

 

Teams or individuals from the two schools will compete in various events, including Robotics, Problem Solving, Technology Design, Flight and Video Game Design. A story about Brookside's robot builders and the district's emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education was featured in the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. District Teacher of the Year named state finalist

SARASOTA - District Teacher of the Year Katrin Rudge was surprised May 8 in the Aquadome at Riverview High as one of five educators from throughout the state who will compete for the title of 2014 Department of Education/ Macy's Teacher of the Year.  

 

Rudge, a marine science teacher at RHS, is the director of the school's Aquascience Program and co-director of the Stars to Starfish Program. She was named Sarasota County Teacher of the Year in March. 

 

The state winner will be named July 11, 2013, at Hard Rock Live at Universal Studios CityWalk in Orlando. Read more...  

 

Middle and high school students 'make history'

TALLAHASSEE - Students from Pine View School, Booker Middle School, Heron Creek Middle School and Sarasota Virtual Academy impressed the judges at the Florida History Fair May 6 at Tallahassee Community College. The award ceremony was May 7 at the Tallahassee Automobile Museum. In their documentaries, websites, exhibits and research papers, the students explored "Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events," the theme of National History Day for 2012-13.

Sarasota County students will be among those representing Florida at the National History Day event, June 9-13, at the University of Maryland in College Park. Read more...

SARASOTA - The Sarasota County School District has selected an administrative assistant to a busy central office department as the 2013 School-Related Employee of the Year. Merscilla Gill, who has worked for the school district for 28 years, received this year's honor at the district's 24th annual School-Related Employee awards luncheon May 1, at Michael's On East in Sarasota.

 

Gill was chosen from among 51 nominees who work as support staff members in the district's schools and departments. All of them were recognized at the event with "Shining Star" awards. Read more...

New principal named for Bay Haven School

  NEW SCHOOL LEADER: Chad Erickson is scheduled to become the next principal of Bay Haven School of Basics Plus July 1.

  

SARASOTA - Superintendent Lori White announced May 7 that Chad A. Erickson will succeed Betsy Asheim as principal of Bay Haven School of Basics Plus in Sarasota, effective July 1. The appointment was approved by the School Board at its May 21 meeting.

Erickson, 40, has been principal of Sherman Elementary School in the Eau Claire Area School District in Wisconsin since 2001. He previously served as a fourth-grade teacher, a high school coach and a middle school assistant principal.

Asheim has served as Bay Haven principal since 2007. She announced her retirement from the district earlier this year to pursue other opportunities. Read more...

Achieva Credit Union opened a branch on the campus of Sarasota County Technical Institute in May. The office, which is open to the public, is staffed by Achieva professionals and students in the SCTI Accounting Program. Pine View School has been ranked the sixth best high school in the nation by U.S. News and World Report. In Florida high school rankings in the same study, Pine View was ranked number one. Other Sarasota County public schools in the study's rankings of the state's best are Riverview, Booker, Venice and North Port high schools. Click here to read more.
