OUR DISTRICT PASTOR |
This week seems to be the week of holidays. Wednesday was a special day for all the Star Wars fans. "May the Force (Fourth) be with you." (That was on May 4th in case you didn't realize that.) I don't know lots about Star Wars but I have seen the movies. I wanted some clever things to say throughout the day but I couldn't think of anything. Instead I made Chewbacca noises at people in the elevator. It's a long ride down from the sixth floor once you've made people uncomfortable with Wookie sounds. I'll rethink that strategy for next May 4th. Today is Cinco DeMayo. I read up a little on the history of this special day. Mexico won a battle against France on this day and from what I read, we celebrate this more in the US than they do in Mexico. The article I read showed lots of pictures of Mexican food so I'm celebrating at Taco Bell for lunch. Sunday is the big holiday, Mothers' Day! I hope you are planning on doing something nice for your mother this Sunday. If not, I need to introduce you to a 30-day holiday that follows an uncelebrated Mothers' Day. It's called "Doghouse Month." Believe me, don't fall into the lie that Mothers' Day is just a made-up Hallmark Holiday. Celebrate your mom! Let me tell you a little bit about my mom. My mom is quiet and reserved. This was in contrast to my dad who had a personality as big as the universe. Church and the Lord were everything to them. If the doors were open and something was happening, we were there. Church was like my second home. My mom was on the NWMS council, taught Sunday School, played the piano when they needed someone to fill in, and helped with every pot luck and dinner the church ever had. Likewise, my dad did anything and everything he could for the church. I never remember hearing my parents complain about anything at church. They supported the pastor and were generous with their time and money. When I felt called into ministry, I was nervous about telling my parents. We didn't have any clergy in our family. But they were extremely supportive and thrilled that God would use someone from our family to be a pastor. Over the years, my mom has encouraged me to do one thing...follow the will of God. She has been encouraging and supportive but all of that is secondary to her telling me, "Always do what the Lord wants you to do." My mother is a person of strong values, complete commitment, quiet strength, and God's love. My mother-in-law, June, has had an interesting life. Her parents died when she was just a girl. She bounced around from relative to relative, and neighbors and friends while she was growing up. She never had a home during her teenage years. She just lived with whomever could house her. Even though her life and home situation was one big question mark, a constant was God. She was saved early in life and no matter what was happening, church and the Lord were close to her. She met my father-in-law and they got married. I'd like to say from there on it was a "happily ever after-type" story, but that hasn't been their reality. Most of their years have been happy and blessed, but along the way there have been some extremely difficult times. A downturn in the economy back in the '80's caused them to have to relocate across the country and away from their daughters who were in college. There have been other hardships and tough times for my in-laws. But one thing my mother-in-law always says is, "I don't know how people get along without the Lord." God has been a source of refuge, strength and comfort to her. As a little girl who didn't have a home, God provided security to her. Through adult years when plans she made were changed by life, God always provided and brought comfort. She has lived out what it means to totally depend on God. I'm thankful for these two moms in my life. They are blessings to me and I hope I am a blessing to them. They are great examples of what it means to be Godly! Happy Mothers' Day to all the moms out there! You make a difference and you are appreciated. I pray for the love, peace, contentment and joy of the Lord to fill you! Blessings, Dave Lutz
