OUR DISTRICT PASTOR
| I wanted to give you some updates within the last month from around the district:
--Rev. Gordon Runyon is our new pastor at the Massillon church. Pastor Gordon was saved in this church and called to ministry. It's amazing to see how the Lord brings things around and now he is the pastor. Please pray for Gordon's wife, Debbie, as she has had some respiratory challenges.
--Rev. Kelly Green has resigned from the Wintersville Church. Pastor Kelly will be moving to Florida. God bless you and be with you, Kelly!
--Rev. Eric Frey has become the pastor of the Stratton Church in addition to pastoring the Toronto Church. Pastor Eric has been doing pulpit supply at Stratton for many months and the church loves him. But what we are hoping for is more than just a pastor for a church. Jefferson County has 29 unique communities. If we try to reach each of these communities with the traditional model of pastor/church we will fail. New and innovative ways must be developed and used. And, Pastor Eric is the perfect leader to move in that direction. I'm excited to see how God moves in Jefferson County!
--Rev. Damon Spurgeon has become the pastor at our Dellroy church. The church at Dellroy went a long time without a pastor, but in many ways became stronger during this interim time as people took ownership and leadership in their congregation. Pastor Damon comes from Columbus, Indiana where he was a long-term youth pastor, interim pastor, District NYI president for a decade, and gifted musician. His wife, Irishe, is one of the nicest people you will ever meet! --Pastor Jim Marshall is our supply pastor at The New Beginning Church in North Canton. Pastor Jim is an experienced pastor who has been preaching at TNB and is now taking on more responsibility for the congregation. I've known Pastor Jim for many years on both the Northwestern Ohio District and the K-church training. We are thrilled to have Pastor Jim serving in East Ohio.
--Our district Work and Witness team recently arrived home from Paraguay. These nineteen missions-minded people made a difference for the Kingdom of God.
--Thanks to everyone who has pitched in to help with the water crisis in Sebring. Pastor Mike and Laura Kimball have been at the front of the solution in Sebring. Many of our churches have provided clean drinking water so the church can be generous in giving to the community. Money has also been donated so that filtration systems can be given to residents to keep their water safe. East Ohio Nazarene hearts are big!
--Thanks to all who braved the snow to come to Team Day last Saturday. It's always good to be together as the East Ohio Family. I had many comments and responses about how helpful it was to learn more about who God has created us to be. I wanted to mention a few of the resources I quickly shared.
Soar With Your Strengths is a great and easy-to-read book that explains more about what Strength philosophy is all about. I emphasize Easy To Read!
Well Being helps you to achieve balance and take care of yourself. If life and ministry is feeling a little out of control and overwhelming, make this book a must read.
Strengths Based Leadership is about how to work with other people's strengths. How do you motivate a 'learner?' How do you correct a 'commander?' If nothing else, you should get this book and read the sections that are based on your spouse's strengths.
One last thought... the DVD that was shown is from a book called, The Truth About You, by Marcus Buckingham. The DVD is included in the book. I actually picked this up at an Ollie's Bargain Barn for about two bucks a few years back (I LOVE Ollie's!!). I loaned the book out to a pastor, but if you would like it at a later time, let me know.
--I've been reading in Joshua over and over since the first of the year. There's a verse in chapter 1 that I've heard so many times it has sort of lost its power. But it's become more meaningful to me and an encouragement to my soul. "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
Circumstances will scare us. Events will discourage us. But the more powerful reality is that God WILL be with us and that makes all the difference.
Blessings, Dave Lutz

CHURCH PLANTING BASIC TRAINING |
April 18 - 22, 2016
Church Planting Essentials (CPE)
Three-day church planting "basic training."
The materials were created by Dynamic Church Planting International (DCPI), based upon years of working in mission areas where the church is expanding rapidly. Churches Planting Churches (CPC) is a three-day church sponsorship 101. Certified Trainer Training (CT) equips and certifies participants to re-teach the materials in their local context. It is provided at no extra cost and requires attendance at a session the day before one's other chosen track and the day after (see schedule below). Please note that lay people are encouraged and welcome to participate. Why this training and not something else?- It's Simple: Basic principles to apply to a variety of church plant models in many contexts
- It's Reproducible: Geared toward creating churches that will multiply
- It's Re-Teachable: Contains sessions that certify attendees to reteach the material
- It's Low-Cost: The cost (noted below) covers your registration fee and some meals. Travel, lodging, and any remaining expenses would be on your own.
Where will it be held and how much will it cost? Wadsworth Church of the Nazarene - 734 High Street - Wadsworth, OH 44281 - Your $39 cost covers your registration fee and three lunches (Tuesday - Thursday). Lodging is recommended at the following hotels: Holiday Inn - 231 Park Center Dr. - Wadsworth, OH 44281 - (330) 334-7666 OR Comfort Inn - 5 Park Center Dr.- Wadsworth, OH 44281 - (330) 336-7692 Breakfast is included at both hotels. To NCO and East Ohio churches:
Bill Wiesman, Director of Evangelism for the USA/Canada Region will be one of the instructors at the DCPI Training event described above. He wrote this short note to encourage attendance at the DCPI training in April being held at Wadsworth. Could you help spread the word in your churches? It is open to both clergy and laity.
Blessings, Pastor Craig Drurey
Hi Craig, We are excited to partner with you for the soon coming training in Ohio for the North Central and East Ohio Districts. The good news is that God is continuing to bless these training events with His presence. We are praying with you for a wonderful Spirit-led event. One or more training has been completed by more than 2,700 Nazarene leaders in the last four years! If someone has completed one of the tracks being offered (Churches Planting Churches (CPC) or Church Planting Essentials (CPE)), I would encourage completion of the second track... I strongly urge any pastor who has not yet participated to find out what God is doing through these dynamic trainings. God is at work! And, we get to be a part of what He is doing!
Blessings,
Bill

LEAP Seminar: Reinventing Jesus - Answers to the New Testament Critics
With Dan Wallace
Friday, April 15, 2016
9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
Foster Hall, Ariel Arena, MVNU Main Campus
Cost: $49 per person, $45 for two or more from the same church, and includes materials, lunch and snacks.
Complimentary Registrations: You will receive a complimentary registration if you have registered for the MVNU PALCON by April 1, 2016
Reinventing Jesus - Answers to the New Testament Critics:
Dan Wallace will give answers to the questions asked by critics concerning the authenticity of the New Testament. In short, he will show us how we know that what we have in our hands today is reliable and tells the truth about Jesus.
Questions the critics are asking:
- Can we trust the New Testament?
- Weren't the stories about Jesus made up long after he lived?
- Didn't the ancient scribes deliberately corrupt the copies of the New Testament, shaping it to their own preconceived notions of what was "the truth"?
- What about the books that became the New Testament: Hadn't the victors simply suppressed scores of other Gospels and epistles that were circulating?
About our Speaker:
Dr. Wallace has been on faculty at Dallas Seminary for more than a quarter century. He is Senior Professor of New Testament Studies. His academic society memberships include the Society of New Testament Studies, the Institute for Biblical Research, the Society of Biblical Literature. Wallace specializes in Greek grammar, textual criticism, NT exegesis, and biblical theology.
In addition to his duties at Dallas Seminary, he is also the Executive Director of the Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts (csntm.org). This is an independent non-profit institute whose initial goal is to digitally photograph every Greek New Testament manuscript and post the images on the Internet.
Wallace has written, co-authored, or contributed to more than two-dozen books, and has been a consultant for four different Bible translations. His Exegetical Syntax of the New Testament is the standard intermediate-advanced Greek grammar in the English-speaking world, and it has been translated into more than half a dozen languages.
