OUR DISTRICT PASTOR |
You've probably heard this old saying. "There are three types of people. The first type of person makes things happen. The second type of person watches things happen. And the third type of person wonders what just happened." I think the truth is at one time or another, we are each one of those types. --If you saw the end of the Miami and Duke football game last Saturday, the referees were definitely wondering "What just happened?" If you missed it, look it up on YouTube because I've never seen anything like it. --On Tuesday, voters showed up at the polls to keep full legalization of marijuana out of Ohio. Voters making things happen! (Who said our country is going to pot?)
Let's call these three types of lifestyles Initiate/Spectate/Hibernate. Again, I believe that we are probably each of these depending on the aspect of life. The secret of success is initiating the things that truly matter and avoiding the noise that is just the static of life. What I want to encourage you in today is to stop talking about initiating the things that matter and ACTUALLY GO DO IT! Let me tell you about a young man who has been a friend of our family for a long time. His name is Adam. Adam has been one of my son's best friends since they were little boys. Adam always had ideas and dreams that were huge. Actually, calling his dreams huge would be like calling a Big Gulp a sip. They were Gargantuan! We would be sitting around the dinner table talking and Brad would bring up some story, or adventure or idea that would be off the charts and I would ask, "Is this a Brad and Adam thing?" It always included Adam. Brad and Adam had an idea. The summer after they graduated high school they were going to hike the Appalachian Trail...the entire thing...all 2,168.1 miles of it! Their plan was to go to the beginning of it, start hiking, and stop when they got to the end. I told Brad all the reasons why this was ridiculous. I asked, "Do you have any experience? What are you going to do about nutrition? Do you have equipment? Have you trained?" His answer was they would put some granola bars in a backpack and be just fine. He then told me, "Why do you have to be so negative? Why do you have to squash our hopes? Why can't you encourage us to do great things?" And in gentle, fatherly wisdom I answered, "Because this is a STUPID IDEA!" They didn't hike the Appalachian Trail that summer. This past summer, Adam had an idea...something he wanted to accomplish... something he wanted to make happen and initiate. He wanted to see the country...all of it...every beautiful, exciting, interesting place in America...all of those places you think, "One day I hope to go to..." Adam wasn't going to think about it or wish, he was going to do it. So, he got in his car-a little Honda Civic-and took off. We watched his journey unfold on Facebook as he posted pictures of Chicago, Mount Rushmore, Yosemite, and the Pacific Coast. He just posted a picture of a cairn he built in a beautiful stream in Northern Michigan. When we went to San Antonio for Brad's Air Force graduation, we did what was called the "Mission Trail." There were five old, historic missions that you can visit with the fifth being the Alamo. Brad said, "This is like an Adam thing. I'm going to call him and tell him to come down here and do this. He'll think it's cool." I didn't tell Brad how many miles out of the way it was or how much it would cost him in gas or how long the trip would be. Because for Adam, if it's worth experiencing, he'll make it happen. For us as pastors and church leaders, we could use a little of Adam's spirit. A little more "let's just do this" and a little less, "it'll never work." How long are we going to talk about things without pulling the trigger? How long are we going to talk about all the reasons we can't do certain things we wish we could? How long are we going to watch others do the things we wish we were doing? Sometimes you get in your little Civic and start making things happen! The Bible says, "With God all things are possible!" (Matt 19:26) Would you join me and embrace this goal--between now and Thanksgiving, what is one thing you have been wanting to initiate, but you just haven't done it? You've got three weeks to make it happen! Let me know your goals and let me know your stories. I'm praying for you!
Amazing things on the way!

EAST OHIO DISTRICT TEAM MEETING
November 12, 2015 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
The New Beginning Church of the Nazarene
"DONUTS, DEVOTIONS, AND DAVE"
Hey Pastors! We are going to do something a little different for Team Day. Since nearly every Sunday I have been at churches that are in pastoral transition, I haven't had a chance to meet many of you. So, our Team Day is going to be a time of friendship, hanging out and a short devotion and worship time.
It's important to be connected as friends and this time is an opportunity to make friends and connect with current ones. We will have donuts and coffee as you arrive. We will do a short worship and devotion later in the morning. But the agenda of the morning is friendship.
My hope is that this will be the most encouraging morning of your week! I look forward to meeting many of you that I haven't met, and can't wait to see others I've already made friends with!
Meet at 8:30 a.m. at The New Beginning Church of the Nazarene for coffee and donuts, then gather in the sanctuary for fellowship and worship time. Lunch will not be provided. All pastors and pastoral staff are encouraged to attend. The New Beginning Church of the Nazarene 5640 Portage St. NW, North Canton (330-494-2375) |

Kenmore Community Members of Kenmore Community are collecting sports equipment new or used to take with us to donate to schools, communities, and individual children when we return to Nicaragua! The multi-church group that went in 2014 took "tons" of basketballs, soccer balls, jerseys, etc. and we're looking to take even more when we return in July 2016. Please share this need and pray for God to bless this effort in a mighty way so we can share God's Love with the children of Nicaragua through sports! We also have space on the trip. If you would like more information on being a team member please contact trip coordinator Harley Weidlich at 330-608-6570 with any questions or concerns .....Thank You and God Bless! Terry W. CHURCH PLANTING BASIC TRAINING |
Church Planting Essentials (CPE) is a three-day church planting "basic training." The materials were created by Dynamic Church Planting International (DCPI), based upon years of working in mission areas where the church is expanding rapidly. Churches Planting Churches (CPC) is a three-day church sponsorship 101. Certified Trainer Training (CT) equips and certifies participants to re-teach the materials in their local context. It is provided at no extra cost and requires attendance at a session the day before one's other chosen track and the day after (see schedule below). Please note that lay people are encouraged and welcome to participate. Why this training and not something else?- It's Simple: Basic principles to apply to a variety of church plant models in many contexts
- It's Reproducible: Geared toward creating churches that will multiply
- It's Re-Teachable: Contains sessions that certify attendees to reteach the material
- It's Low-Cost: The cost (noted below) covers your registration fee and some meals. Travel, lodging, and any remaining expenses would be on your own.
Where will it be held and how much will it cost? Wadsworth Church of the Nazarene - 734 High Street - Wadsworth, OH 44281 - Your $39 cost covers your registration fee and three lunches (Tuesday - Thursday).
