East Ohio District Church of the Nazarene
September 11, 2015
 OUR DISTRICT PASTOR

Last week I spent a couple of days with another District Superintendent. Whenever a person is elected DS, the denomination sends this person to meet with them and give some on-site training. It was extremely helpful as we moved through a lot of information. He had several sessions of training material that we worked through. There was a lot of informal time that we conversed. He did a lot of listening, a lot of teaching, and a lot of affirming. When we were all done, life seemed a little bit different for me. The load seemed a little bit lighter. My confidence was a little bit stronger. My hope was a little bit higher. This shouldn't have surprised me and it shouldn't surprise you because God has created us to do ministry and life and....well, everything together!

A sociologist called us "Rugged Individualists." We are cowboy-types that like to do things on our own. That's our culture and society. We value the Lone Ranger-type who makes things happen on their own. I think we would admit that we like to get close to others, just not TOO close. We like to be in crowds with lots of people but we don't like to connect. Maybe this is because it's hard enough to be responsible for ourselves, let alone other people as well.

The Bible says, "It is not good for man to be alone." This isn't just about marriage and the idea of a man and woman coming together. It is a statement of truth about our very essence as people. We need each other. My time with this friend who traveled all the way to East Ohio to help me taught me this truth again. We need each other. Let me share a few thoughts and questions about the idea of needing one another:

--With whom can you be transparent? It's hard to be vulnerable. It's hard to let down your guard. But everyone needs a friend that we can be honest with about anything. We won't have ten of these friends. Most of the time there are only a couple of these people we are totally honest with in a lifetime. Cultivate these friendships.

--Who is teaching you? A professor I once had who I considered one of the smartest people I have ever known talked about all the people he learned from, not just people smarter than him, but he learned from everyone. We will miss a lot if we think we can only learn from people above us. We can learn from anyone at anytime. I think it's great to have a mentor and all of us should have one. But always have your mind open.

--Who are you teaching? This is the essence of discipleship. We learn and grow. We pass that on to others. Don't fall into the trap of information collector. If we are not passing on the treasures that others teach us, we don't leave the world a better place.

--We are better together! Some people don't understand the need for a denomination or why churches should be connected. There are many reasons but one very practical reason is that we are better together. Community, friendships, compassion, teaching and learning are all parts of what knits us together and makes us better.

Take some time this week to just be a friend and spend some time with someone. We weren't created to do life alone. We need each other.

Better Together,
Dave Lutz

Alabaster Offering - September 2015

History of Alabaster

In 1948, Rev. Elizabeth Vennum, Global Council member, was asked to think and pray about a challenging project for NMI. Rev. Vennum knew if God wanted the project to take place, He would provide the plan. On the return trip from Kansas City, God gave her His plan of giving "love" gifts. It was modeled after the sacrifice of the woman who anointed Jesus' head with expensive perfume poured from an alabaster jar (Matthew 26:6-13).

At the Global NMI Council meeting in 1949, Mrs. Vennum told of the Alabaster plan God had given her. The Council unanimously adopted the plan, and the first offering was received in 1949.

The Board of General Superintendents approved the plan for Alabaster funds to be used exclusively for buildings and properties in cross-cultural ministries.

Now, more than 60 years later, Alabaster is still strong, having provided more than 9,000 projects since 1949. Faithful Nazarenes around the world have given over $100 million dollars for this much-needed ministry.

Alabaster offerings builds:  Churches, Schools, Medical Facilities and Homes of those around our World!
