OUR DISTRICT PASTOR
|
I found my favorite restaurant in Canton. It's called "Dog Daze." A huge thank you to Dan Skinner and Rick Bishop for treating my first of many lunches at this great place!
I realize that many of you probably turn your nose up at things like hot dogs, but I have an emotional connection to them. When I was a kid, our Wednesday evenings played out like this--Dad got paid and we went to the bank (we got suckers through the drive up window). Then we went to one of the hot dog joints and ate supper in the car. After that we went to church. So, I always equated hot dogs as something special and part of a great family routine.

Matthew Stonie - Hot Dog Eating Champ!
|
Being a hot dog lover, a few years ago we attended the event that is like the Super Bowl of hot dog eating. That's right, the 4 th of July Nathan's Hot Dog eating championship. Our family rode the subway to Coney Island and packed in with about 40,000 other people to watch grown men eat MASSIVE amounts of hot dogs. That year was historic as Joey Chestnut and Kobashayi tied after 10 minutes of eating. They went into a sudden death eat-off and Joey Chestnut won his first championship. This year, Joey was beaten by Matthew Stonie who ate 62 hot dogs! Can you imagine eating 62 hot dogs? Right now some of you are making a face like you are sick as you imagine eating that many hot dogs!
But what's wrong with eating 62 hot dogs? Well, if you ate them in 10 minutes like Matt Stonie did, A LOT! But what if you ate 62 hot dogs over a year? Or over 5 years? Or what if you ate 62 hot dogs over a lifetime? Maybe it's less about the amount and more about the pace. Context always contains the idea of "what" we are doing and also the "how" we are doing it.
One thing I learned living in Northwestern Ohio with all the farm land was the truth of the rhythm in life. There is a season to plant, a season to grow, to harvest and rest. It's a rhythm and if you shortcut the rhythm, you will pay dearly for it. God created us for rhythm. We have seasons of life. There is the Sabbath principle and the time of Jubilee. In church life, there are "seasons" which include times of Advent, Lent, and the other seasons which are part of a rhythm of the church. Some of these seasons are about celebration, some are about anticipation and some are very intense and challenging.
How are your rhythms? How is the pace of what you are doing as a church and also as an individual? Again, the question isn't always whether we are doing the right things as a church, but it can be the pace of what we are doing and how we are doing it. You may be trying to feed your congregation 62 hot dogs, but at what pace?
If you feel you are out of rhythm as an individual, let me give you a couple of books I've read that have helped me gain some health and perspective. Simple Life by Thom Rainer and Momentum for Life by Michael Slaughter are two excellent resources.
Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with 62 hot dogs. But I believe that should be a yearly amount and not a 10-minute meal. It's all about rhythm!
Have a Great Weekend,
Dave Lutz
