BACK-to-SCHOOL SAFETY

Children return to school for the 2016-17 academic year on Wednesday, August 17th. Motorists are reminded that state law bands the use of cell phones in a school zones 24/7 and texting while driving is prohibited at all times on all Illinois roadways. In addition, motorists are reminded to yield to pedestrians at both controlled (those designed with pavement markings and traffic signs & lights) and uncontrolled intersections. The Illinois 'Crosswalk Law' requires motorists to stop and yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing a roadway within a crosswalk when the pedestrian is upon that half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling, or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger. School parents are encouraged to remind their children about how to safely board and exit a school bus and to observe the posted anti-idling requirements adjacent to or on school property. Village Health Code Prohibits Dogs from Roaming AT LARGE

Village pet owners are required to be in control of their dog(s) at all times and places within the Village. A resident's dog may roam free on their property  when an area exists that is enclosed by a fence whose height is sufficient to prevent the dog from escaping. In the absence of a fenced area,  a resident must restrain their dog(s) when outdoors with a secure collar and leash or chain securely attached to a run line or an anchor that keeps the dog on the premises. When taking your dog(s) on a walk in the neighborhood, the dog owners must use a sturdy leash not more than 6 feet in length that is properly secured to a collar so it is completely under the owner's control. A dog found roaming free without a collar and/or a current valid Village dog license may be impounded. A dog owner seeking to be reunited with their dog must first pay a $10 lost dog fine to the Village and any fees incurred by DuPage County Animal Control. The purchase of a current dog tag from the Village may also be required.

Street Maintenance Work Continues

The Village takes great pride in the condition of its roadway network. Roadways are a major capital asset and thus are maintained in a timely fashion fashion similar to other Village assets like the water and sewer systems. Recently repaved roadways are treated the   following year with an asphalt rejuvenator spray that fills in the small micro cracks to prevent water from entering the pavement structure. In addition, the spray coats the pavement's surface with a UV barrier protecting it from sunlight. Sand is immediately applied to rejuvenated streets to promote skid resistance and reduce tracking by vehicles. American Road Maintenance from Itasca, the project contractor will begin work during the week of August 15th (weather permitting) to apply this maintenance spray to more than 300,000 square yards of pavement surface that stretches across 76 individual street segments. Glenbard Parent Series Kicks Off with a Family Book Read

The 2016-17 Glenbard Parent Series kicks off on Thursday, August 25th at Glenbard West H.S. in Glen Ellyn when Rebecca Skloot, author of the best selling book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks will lead a discussion of her literary work. Her book remained on the New York Times best selling list for 3 years, has been translated into more than 25 languages and soon be made into a feature-length movie. The book tells the story of Henrietta Lacks, a poor black tobacco farmer who died of cervical cancer in 1951. Upon her death, her cancer cells were taken without her prior knowledge or consent. Laboratory scientists determined her cells to be uniquely immortal and subsequently cultured and distributed them to labs across the country. Her cultured cells were instrumental in the development of the polio vaccine, treatments for cancers, cloning, gene mapping, invitro fertilization and a myriad other medical breakthroughs. The family book discussion will begin at 7PM in the Glenbard West Auditorium.
Refinance Program Assistance for Underwater Homeowners

On August 1st, the Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) rolled out the I-Refi program, a new program designed to help income-eligible homeowners  current on their mortgage payments who owe more than their home is worth as a result of declining property values in that market. The program offers eligible homeowners up to $50,000 in federal assistance to reduce the balance owed on their current mortgage and links those same homeowners with program lenders to refinance the home with a new affordable loan based on its current market value. Illinois is one of two states in the nation to launch a refinance program using federal Hardest Hit Funds. It is estimated that 14% of Illinois homeowners have an underwater mortgage that is financially destabilizing to their household and a continuing drag on our state's economic recovery. For details on the program as well as a list of participating mortgage lenders, click on the following link
