Vehicle Sticker Enforcement to Begin Soon

The Village continues late vehicle registration and will do so until all local vehicle owners have purchased and subsequently display a valid 2016-17 vehicle sticker. If you have not yet registered your vehicle(s) with the Village, you are encouraged to so do before sticker enforcement begins next month. 30th Annual National Night Out Against Crime & Drugs

On Tuesday, August 2nd, the National Association of Town Watch and the Village's Police Department invite Carol Stream residents to join with communities nationwide to participate in the Village's 30th Annual National Night Out. Residents are encouraged to lock their doors, turn on their home's exterior lights and spend the evening hours from 7 - 10 PM outdoors with their neighbors on patios, front porches or at a neighborhood block party to show your support for the Police Department's crime fighting efforts. Residents are invited to attend the Community Barbecue in Community Park beginning at 6:00 PM for food, refreshments, exhibits, amusement rides and music. Remember-
Lights On, Means Lights Out for Crime!

Notify the Village of Vacant Properties in Your Neighborhood

Village Code requires property owners to maintain grass and weeds below 8 inches. The owner of a property found in violation of the Village's grass and weed ordinance will be asked to mow the property. Property owners who fail to keep grass and weeds properly maintained
will receive a citation from the Village.
Properties from time-to-time become vacant without the property owner having made arrangements for lawn maintenance. Residents who are aware that a property in their neighborhood has become vacant and is not being maintained are encouraged to notify the Community Development Department at 630-871-6230.

Occasionally a group of neighbors will mow the lawn of a vacant property in their neighborhood that oftentimes keeps this property maintenance  problem from being referred to the department for follow up property maintenance compliance. While we appreciate efforts to keep Carol Stream looking good, the Village can assist with ensuring that the responsible party maintains the subject  property. For questions on weed/tall grass enforcement, e-mail communitydevelopment@carolstream.org
Consider a Donation to Help Redesign Memorial Park

In 1963, following the tragic death of Keeneyville Protection District firefighter Edward Mangels, the Village formally dedicated Memorial Park at the intersection of Thunderbird & Silverleaf Blvd. to honor local residents who gave their life in the service of our nation as well as local first responders who sacrifice their lives serving our community. Members of local VFW Post 10396 have partnered with both the Park District and Village on a fundraising effort to fund a redesign of the site to improve its layout and aesthetics as a solemn community space. The fundraising goal is $200,000 that will fund the construction of new walking paths, additional landscaping,  the installation of flagpoles for each branch of the military as well as granite markers, seating and a shelter. Information and contribution boxes are located at the main customer service counters at the Simkus (849 W. Lies Rd.) & Fountain View Recreation Centers, the Public Library (616 Hiawatha Dr.) and the Village Hall (500 N. Gary Ave.). All donations for the Memorial Park Improvement project are fully tax-deductible to the extent permitted by the U.S. Tax Code. The VFW Post staffs a project exhibit at all Thursday summer concerts at the Town Center where residents and the general public can view architectural renderings for the future Memorial Park.

Water Reclamation Center Annual Operating Report

The operation of the Village's Water Reclamation Center is performed under a private contractor with CH2M, a full-service engineering firm that has several areas of expertise including wastewater treatment consulting and operations. Wastewater treatment is an essential public health service and during this past operating year, CH2M staff successfully treated 1.76 billions gallons of wastewater with no recordable work place injuries. The environmental science that governs this critical public service requires continuous monitoring of multiple phases of wastewater treatment and the timely maintenance of the facility's processes (aeration, digestion, solids separation, de-chlorination etc.) and its vast inventory of treatment hardware and equipment. The operating contract with CH2M has financial performance incentives that, when achieved, return a 50% share of operational savings back to the Village. On June 20th, the Facility Supervisor presented to the Village Board of Trustees the Annual Report for the 2015-16 operating year. As part of that presentation, the facility supervisor presented Mayor Saverino with a rebate check of $22,693 that totaled the Village's portion of savings. The Annual Report details the numerous accomplishments made by the CH2M staff during the past year as well as those areas were operational savings were achieved.

Register to Donate in the Upcoming Guns vs Hoses Blood Drive

Carol Stream Fire District professionals will attempt to return the traveling trophy to station HQ when they go head-to-head against the Carol Stream Police Department in the 2016 Guns vs Hoses Blood Drive competition that will take place on Wednesday, August 10th from 3:30 - 7:30 PM at the Bielawski Municipal Center.

Every
2 seconds, a patient in a U.S. Hospital or Medical-Surgical Center is in need of blood. The American Red Cross reports that a total of 44,000 blood donations are needed every day in our nation.
One whole blood donation, which takes approximately 45 minutes can come to the rescue of as many as 4 patients.  The benefits of donating are numerous and include:

Preserves Your Cardio-Vascular Health - donating is known to reduce the viscosity of a person's blood which if not managed can damage blood vessels and arteries and lead to advanced cardiovascular disease.

Reduces Your Cancer Risk - iron stores in the body have been know to increase a person's cancer risk with age. Excessive iron in the blood is believed to increase free radical damage in the body. Donating will reduce iron build up in the blood.

Burns Calories - it is estimated that a donor burns approximately 650 calories during a typical blood donation. However, donating blood should not be considered an element of a person's weight loss regimen.

Produces Positive Regard by Helping Save Lives - Donated blood is divided into various components that can be used by 3 - 4 patients in their medical/rehabilitative care.

PACE Transitions Service Routes to 'Bus Stop Only'

PACE operates a suburban bus operation that has historically allowed its riders to flag and board a bus mid-block rather than at signed bus stops as is the case when riding the CTA system. In keeping with its long range plan to modernize the system, PACE recently completed the transition  of its routes to POSTED STOPS ONLY. This system improvement enhances rider safety by incorporating Transit Signal Priority (TSP) technology to reduce transit vehicle dwell times. Buses equipped with this signal technology are now able,  when approaching signalized intersections to extend of green light times and shorten those of red lights . As part of this effort, PACE has installed new bus stop signs that give riders with mobile devices instructions on how to obtain real-time information  about the location and estimated arrival time of the next bus. In addition to this new SMS messaging service, riders can also use
Bus Tracker or Bus Tracker Live Map to find out when a bus will be arriving at a particular stop in the Pace service area.
