Is the Selfie Syndrome Undermining Our Kid's Future

Empathy is the ability to sense other people's emotions and  imagine what someone

else might be thinking or feeling. It is a  trait that must be taught and nurtured. to confront today's self-absorption epidemic. Those who have not fully developed this character trait struggle with academic performance as well as a decreased ability to collaborate, innovate, and problem solve -- all must-have skills for the global economy. On Wednesday, June 15th at 7 pm, author and parenting consultant Dr. Michele Borba will share a revolutionary, researched-based 9-step plan for reversing the Selfie Syndrome. Participants should come away with real world strategies to give  kids the Empathy Advantage and a proven success skill. Learn why self-control is a better predictor of wealth, health and happiness than grades or IQ and how to reclaim face-to-face conversation and kids emotional lives in a plugged-in world. Join us on the campus of Glenbard South H.S. in Glen Ellyn and learn how to nurture successful, happy teens who are kind, moral, courageous and resilient.

Outdoor Watering Restrictions in Effect Year Round

The Village is a member of the DuPage Water Commission who in turn purchases Lake Michigan water from the City of Chicago on behalf of its 25 member communities. Because Lake Michigan water is a limited resource, each of the member communities has adopted outdoor watering restrictions in an effort to encourage conservation and the judicious use of drinking water for landscape watering. The Village's water and sewer use code allows water customers to CONTINUOUSLY water landscaping on calendar
dates which correspond with the last number of their property address. Properties ending in an even number can only water before 10 am and after 4 pm on even number calendar dates (e.g. 752 Thunderbird Trl. on June 14th). Conversely, properties ending in an odd number can only water before 10 am and after 4 pm on odd number calendar dates (e.g. 421 Cochise Ct. on July 3rd). Watering landscaping with an automatic hose shut off device is not subject to the Village's outdoor watering restrictions.
On Wednesday, June 15th, dine at any 1 of 6 local Carol Stream eateries in an effort to combat the growing hunger problem:

 Alberto's Italian Restaurant    150 S. Gary Ave.          6 AM - 11 PM
 Augustino's Rock n' Roll Deli   246 S. Schmale Rd.      6 AM -   9 PM
 Culver's of Carol Stream          290 S. Schmale Rd.    10 AM - 10 PM
 Manhattan's Grill                      300 S. Schmale Rd.    11 AM - 11 PM
 Red Apple Pancake House        414 S. Schmale Rd.     6 AM -   3 PM
 Village Tavern & Grill               291 S. Schmale Rd.    11 AM - 10 PM

The owners of these restaurants have pledged to donate 10% of the day's dining receipts to the People's Resource Center. Proceeds from the effort will be used to buy food items needed to restock their emergency food pantry that serves hundreds of under-resourced individuals and families in our community.
Property Owners Must Remove Hazard Trees in Timely Manner

Village regulations require the prompt removal of hazard tree(s) which the
code defines as follows:
* a DEAD tree;...
* any tree or portion that is SUBSTANTIALLY DEAD or in deteriorated or UNSTABLE CONDITION to such an extent that it presents a hazard to persons or property;
* any tree overhanging another's property or the public right-of-way that, because of its DETERIORATED CONDITION constitutes a danger to the public's health, safety and welfare;
* any tree that obstructs or INTERFERES WITH THE FREE and SAFE PASSAGE of pedestrians or vehicles.

An owner or tenant of a property within the Village where a hazard tree exists is required to have it promptly removed. Failure to do so exposes a property owner to significant liability for property damage and personal injury that may likely result from inaction or disregard of a dangerous condition. For more information on what do to if you have a dead Ash tree on your property, click on the following link What Should I Do Now?
In Praise of Our 2016 Pond Sweep Volunteers

The Village held its 16th Annual Pond & Stream sweep last weekend and thanks to our army of dedicated volunteers, this year's event was a phenomenal success in helping maintain the health of these natural  waterways. The estimated totals for this year's clean up are as follows:

Litter Removed- 4,160 lbs.
Volunteers -177
Ponds Cleaned - 22

The Village is appreciative of the time and collective effort of this year's volunteers in helping to cleanup local waterways. The ecosystem quality of our ponds and steams is essential for the health of aquatic life, waterfowl and the general public health of our community. Removing flow obstructions from local waterways and ponds is critical to the proper and efficient processing of storm water and helps maximize their overall flood control design.
Housing Choice Voucher Wait List Begins June 20th

The DuPage Housing Authority (DHA) provides housing assistance to participating property owners to offset the cost difference between tenant payments and unit rent. Low income families, seniors and physically challenged persons who qualify and receive housing vouchers can expect to pay between 30% - 40% of their annual adjusted gross income for rent. The available housing options under this program include single-family homes, mobile home units, townhomes and some condominiums. DHA has developed a wait list pre-application process that offers 1,500 applicants an opportunity to apply for housing assistance. Online Wait List registration for the Housing Choice Voucher Program will begin Monday, June 20th at 8:30 am sharp. Prospective applicants that need a paper copy of the pre-application must make a request for this special accommodation in writing to the DuPage Housing Authority (711 E. Mosquito Bite Prevention & the ZIKA Virus

The best way for homeowners to prevent mosquito-borne disease is to first reduce breeding sites on your property. Common breeding sites include clogged gutters and down spouts, uncovered pools, stagnant bird baths, refuse containers without lids, overflowing flower pot drainage trays to name a few. Property surveillance should be a weekly routine all throughout the mosquito season. Secondly, public health officials encourages the general public to practice the following 5 D's of personal protection when outdoors:

Dusk & Dawn- avoid or limit outdoor activity at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
Dress- wear loose-fitting, long-sleeve tee shirts and pants to reduce the amount of exposed skin. Mosquito netting can be used to cover babies younger than 2 months old in carriers, strollers, or cribs to protect them from mosquito bites.
Drain- empty standing water from any outdoor flower pot or container which attracts mosquitoes.
Doors- make sure doors and windows are properly sealed so mosquitoes can't get inside.  Repair your home's torn door and window screens.
DEET- cover exposed skin with insect repellant that contains DEET. Do not use products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus (para-menthanediol) on children younger than 3 years old.

ZIKA: The County Health Department, the Illinois Department of Public Health and CDC are closely monitoring ZIKA cases in our country and abroad. ZIKA virus cases have been confirmed in Central and South America, the Caribbean, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Africa and elsewhere. People living in or traveling to these areas are at risk for this mosquito-borne disease. The virus's symptoms are usually mild, lasting for several days without the need for hospitalization. Studies have found poor pregnancy outcomes such as microcephaly (under-sized head) in some babies whose mothers were infected with the ZIKA virus when pregnant. For women who are pregnant, the CDC recommend they consider postponing travel to any area where there has been an outbreak of the ZIKA virus. Before making travel plans, review the latest list of area's for which TRAVEL NOTICES have been issued. For additional information on ZIKA, click on the following link:
