Mayor Saverino Delivers Annual State of the Village

On May 11th, Mayor Frank Saverino continued the annual tradition of addressing the business community during which he delivered his 'State of the Village'. Accompanied by Village Manager Joe Breinig, Mayor Saverino highlighted several key areas of the Village organization including our financial health, upcoming capital projects of note, customer service and communication enhancements, the status of the Comprehensive Plan project, the recently approved Municipal Center renovation, the successful completion of the 8 year battle to combat the emerald ash borer and reforest the public parkways , new commercial and industrial development underway as well as recent recognitions for excellence in local government awarded to the Village. |

Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony
Members of the Carol Stream VFW Post 10396 invite the community to attend their annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Memorial Park on Monday, May 30th at 11 am. Memorial Park is located at the intersection of Seminole Lane and Thunderbird Trail. Ample on-street parking is available for those planning to attend this solemn ceremony to honor our nation's war dead. Following the 45-minute program, the VFW will host the unveiling of the Memorial Park Redesign that begins at Noon.

Vehicle Registration Continues

Village residents and businesses can register their vehicle(s) at the Bielawski Municipal Center 24/7. The Village Receptionist processes vehicle sticker applications Monday thru Friday between 8 AM - 5 PM. The Police Records Bureau will process applications during the work week after 5 pm and around the clock on Saturday and Sunday. Vehicle owners who have received a registration application(s) in the mail from the Village can register their vehicle(s) online thru Thursday, June 30th. This year's vehicle license fee schedule has remained unchanged since 1993 and is as follows:

Construction of the West Branch DuPage River Trail to Begin
Work on the long-awaited West Branch DuPage River Trail is set to begin Monday, May 23rd. This capital improvement project will involve the construction a 13,000 ft. pedestrian pathway that will run along the eastern Fair Oaks Rd. right-of-way from Oxford Dr. south to St. Charles Rd. From St. Charles Rd., the pathway will intersect east connecting Benjamin Middle School and west connecting the West Branch Regional Trail System. Motorists are reminded that this stretch of Fair Oaks will be a work zone and construction and reduced speed limit signage will be posted all throughout the 4-month project. Speed limits will be strictly enforced and motorists are reminded that all cell phone use is prohibited in both construction and school zones.

The Carol Stream Park District will host the 11th Annual Just Play Recreation Festival on Saturday, May 21st from 10 am - 4 pm on the Town Center campus. This interactive 'try it' sports/fitness festival offers dozens of free activities designed to encourage people of all ages and backgrounds to get active, have fun and try new activities with your family and friends. Offerings will be spread across 7 different Zones including the Baird Performance Arena, the Kids, Party, Sport Court, Water Sports and Public Safety Zones. Resurfacing of St. Charles Rd. to Begin May 23rd
Beginning Monday, May 23rd, the DuPage County Division of Transportation will oversee the resurfacing of the stretch of St. Charles Rd. from Gary Ave. east to Bloomingdale Rd. The Project includes the removal and patching of the pavement's surface, repairs to curbing and sidewalks, placement of a new asphalt surface and traffic markings as well as the replacement of an existing cross road culvert just east of President Street. The project is expected to be completed this coming August.

Take the Bike Safety Challenge to be Eligible for Prizes

The 2nd Annual Mayor's Bike Safety Challenge is underway through May 30th during which time local bicyclists and motorists can take online quizzes to master their knowledge of the rules and regulations that govern the 'Safe Sharing of Illinois Roadways'. For every quiz a contestant passes, their name will be enrolled in weekly prize drawings. There are 3 quizzes each in the Adult motorist and bicyclist category of increasing challenge and 3 quizzes for youth bicyclists. For those interested in participating in this year's Bike Safety Challenge, view the included video and download a copy of the Illinois Bicycle Rules of the Road published by the Illinois Secretary of State.

Traffic Safety Initiative Underway Thru Memorial Day
The Carol Stream Police Department in cooperation with IDOT and the Illinois State Police will continue their annual Click It or Ticket campaign thru the Memorial Day holiday. During this campaign traffic patrol Officers will be checking to ensure motorists and their occupants are wearing seat belts and drivers are sober while behind the wheel. Unbuckled drivers as well as those found in violation of the hands free cell phone will be ticketed and those found driving impaired will be arrested. Illinois seat belt law requires all front and back seat occupants to buckle up. In addition, children must be in a car seat or booster seat until at least age 8 and all children younger than 13 should ride in the back seat.

Restrictions on Parking a Vehicle Across a Public Sidewalk
Public sidewalks provide both residents and the general public with pedestrian access to local schools, parks, the public library, bike path connections, commercial businesses as well as local churches to name a few destinations. The Village's Traffic Code (8-2-18) prohibits a person from stopping, standing or parking a vehicle across a public sidewalk on any day between the hours of 7 am - 10 pm. Residents may however park their vehicle over a public sidewalk overnight between 10 pm - 7 am only. Vehicle owners found violating this parking restriction will be subject to ticketing.

Housing Choice Voucher Wait List Begins June 20th
The DuPage Housing Authority (DHA) provides housing assistance to participating property owners to offset the cost difference between tenant payments and unit rent. Low income families, seniors and physically challenged persons who qualify and receive housing vouchers can expect to pay between 30% - 40% of their annual adjusted gross income for rent. The available housing options under this program include single-family homes, mobile home units, townhomes and some condominiums. DHA has developed a wait list pre-application process that offers 1,500 applicants an opportunity to apply for housing assistance. Online Wait List registration for the Housing Choice Voucher Program will begin Monday, June 20th at 8:30 am sharp. Prospective applicants that need a paper copy of the pre-application must make a request for this special accommodation in writing to the DuPage Housing Authority (711 E.
