Keeping DuPage County COOL Saves You Money

In the fall of 2012, the DuPage County Board adopted a resolution to establish a Cool DuPage environmental consortium for the purpose of reducing carbon emission county-wide. The air quality in the 7-county metropolitan region violate standards of the federal Clean Air Act for smog (ozone) and particle pollution. Baseline aggregate carbon emissions (CO2) across all DuPage county sectors are

16.55 million metric tons. This is equivalent to the annual carbon dioxide emitted by 3.48 million passenger cars or of 1.51 million single-family homes. Poor air quality is known to impair respiratory health and cause new cases of asthma in children and aggravate those with asthma and other serious lung ailments.

In April of 2015, the DuPage County Board adopted the DuPage Energy Conservation & Air Quality Improvement plan that seeks to reduce CO2 reductions 10% by 2020 and 20% by 2030. DuPage County has enlisted the partnership support of its local governments to help lead the charge in their respective communities to begin working toward these CO2 reduction goals. A myriad  of energy efficiency programs to help residents, business, government and non-profit agencies as well as private industry reduce their carbon profile include Smart Ideas for Homes, Smart Ideas for Business, Energy Impact Illinois, NICOR Energy Smart, Preserve Every Drop, Energy Star to name a few. Many energy efficiency program rebates offered under the programs above have brief payback periods and allow the home or building owner to begin saving money within the first year of the improvement.

In successfully achieving the target CO2 reduction goals under this plan, it is estimated that combined savings to county residents and businesses will be $100 million annually.
Artificial Feeding is Harmful to Wildlife & Waterfowl

The artificial feeding of waterfowl (ducks & geese) is harmful to their health. While many people believe that feeding waterfowl leftover bread is helpful, the opposite is true. Artifical feeding of waterfowl causes MALNUTRITION, DEFORMITIES in ducklings and goslings and water pollution from bird waste. Bread and other artificial foods have no nutritional value to waterfowl, and so its regular consumption prevents them from seeking sources of food needed for their healthy development. Waterfowl that become dependent on bread and other artifical food sources are susceptible to contracting 'ANGEL WING'--- a gross deformity of the wing structure that makes their ability to fly and land difficult and potentially fatal.

Uneaten bread in a waterway causes algal to bloom allowing deadly bacteria to spread and alter a lake or stream's chemical and biological concentration. Waterfowl that inhabit tainted waterways most often end up damaging their immune, neurological and reproductive systems thru contact with the surface water. Artificial feeding of waterfowl encourages mass competition for food that ends up getting mixed with bird droppings causing E-COLI POISONING. The deadly combination of algal growth and e-coli dramatically increases the risk of the spread of avian diseases that can easily cause a mass die off in a waterfowl population.

Artificial feeding of waterfowl has known to DELAY their normal MIGRATION pattern causing them to remain in a climate region that can endanger their winter survival from excessive exposure to the cold. If you truly care for wildlife, DO NOT FEED THEM bread or other artificial foods.
