Before heading out in your vehicle, first check local roadway conditions online at www.gettingaroundillinois.org;

For trips with a time deadline, add additional travel time when conditions are snowy & icy

On snow-covered roads, reduce your vehicle's speed, especially when nearing an intersection, a stretch of winding road or curve, a bridge deck and an expressway exit ramp;

Double your vehicle's following distance to 2 car lengths/10 mph of speed;

When traveling behind a snow plow truck, maintain a distance of at least 4 car lengths;

Drive your vehicle in the right-hand lane and only change lanes when it is safe to pass a vehicle;

In a snow/ice storm, drive with your low-beam headlights on;

Never use cruise control when the roadways are snow-covered or icy.
