Colleen Campbell
Dear NEPTA Members,

As the Annual Meeting and Awards Recital approaches on May 20, 2013 my term as president draws to a close. It has been a great honor and privilege to serve NEPTA. I have made many treasured friends and acquired an even deeper admiration for this extraordinary organization and its members.

I offer my sincere thanks to all of the volunteers in NEPTA who have given their time and energy. You are the essence of NEPTA and make our goals of service and enrichment possible to achieve. I wish that I could list each name here! Please accept my heartfelt thanks and admiration for your dedication and my best wishes for your continued success in all that you do!

I am deeply grateful to the NEPTA officers with whom I have been fortunate to work. Vice President Irina Gelman has made the Teachers' Recital a great success, chaired the student recital and competition committee, and offered invaluable advice, assistance and friendship throughout the past two years. I wish you all the best as President! Our brilliant Treasurer, Lindsey Robb, continues to keep meticulous financial records and produce comprehensive reports for each board meeting while maintaining day to day bookkeeping. NEPTA's Recording Secretary, Linda Vieira, along with assistance from Jean Alderman, prepares beautiful detailed notes from each program meeting, ensuring each member has access to the knowledge and information relayed by the speakers. Executive Secretary Cindy Null has provided excellent reports from our quarterly board meetings along with her work on several other committees.

I would also like to thank Tina Hoour talented Newsletter Coordinator who has done an amazing job formatting, editing and delivering the newsletters and notices. Tina's superb computer skills along with her gift for design and composition were an immeasurable help to me throughout the year.

Among our many wonderful efforts, I am especially proud that we have created the Margaret C. Bachelder Memorial Award and completed the online recital and competition applications, assisted by Sue Demb.

I look forward to my continued role in NEPTA and will offer support wherever I can. Once again,
I thank you for the privilege of serving and being part of the NEPTA community. I hope to see you all on May 20th!

Warmly,

Colleen Campbell

ADULT RECITAL
The Adult Recital was held on Sunday, April 7 at the home of Dr. David Rosenthal in Framingham. It was Dr. Rosenthal's second year of hosting and he was the "perfect host" for the afternoon. He provided a reception following the recital, which included hors d'oeurves, a wonderful buffet, which he graciously prepared himself, and it concluded with beverages and homemade desserts provided by Phoebe Yassa. It was a lovely afternoon of piano music, food and good company. The teachers who had participating performers were: Fern Abrams, Jean Alderman, Niva Fried, Rita Mikulinsky, Eleanor Perrone, Victoria Suchodolski, Helena Vesterman and Alice Wilkinson. Congratulations to both teachers and performers. --Submitted by Janice P. Zaganjori, Chair.

TEACHERS' EXCHANGE
On Monday, April 8, NEPTA members were treated to a delightful presentation by Sylvia Chambless and her students on playing the music of Debussy. Sylvia's very successful approach to teaching this challenging repertoire was evident in the accomplished playing of her students with whom she had a wonderful rapport. Please see the program notes skillfully prepared by Jean Alderman.

ODE TO MR. MORSE
Our April Speaker Brian Chung offered a captivating presentation on jazz improvisation for the classical musician, managing to deliver in two short hours a means of understanding and teaching what is often to us an alien life form. With irresistible passion for teaching, Mr. Chung encouraged us to begin with the most basic element of music, rhythm, and build our vocabulary consistently and creatively.

MARGARET C. BACHELDER MEMORIAL AWARDMBAward
For the first recipient of the new Margaret C. Bachelder Memorial Award for the best performance of a Romantic piece at the 2013 NEPTA Alice Hamlet Senior Competition, the award amount has been increased to $500 by Peg's family. Martin Allen, Peg's husband, will present the award at the Recital on May 20 at First Parish in Watertown.

PROGRAM BOOK CHAIR NEEDED
NEPTA has a wonderful volunteer position that you can carry out from the comfort of your own home in the slow summer months! Here is a chance to put your word processing skills to work for NEPTA and to follow in the footsteps of Lindsey Robb, who held the position of Program Book and Membership Directory Chair for many years. Lindsey has very generously offered to mentor the new volunteer, providing the skills necessary to deliver the booklet and directory to our members.
